Sony Ericsson's C905, Z780 and X1 hands-on

We got our grubby mitts all over the latest and greatest from Sony Ericsson, including that new C905 8 megapixel monstrosity, and, of course, the Xperia X1. The C905 is certainly no slouch in the camera department, with that for-serious Xenon flash and dedicated camera keys, but you'll pay for it in thickness -- the C905 is a good deal thicker than its Walkman counterparts, though that does leave room for a nicely formed slide-out keypad. The C905 is capable of geotagging pictures, but can't upload on the fly to photo services just yet like Nokia's new phones, though such capability is in the works. While the C905 seems finely honed for a specific purpose, the Z780 flip phone seems much more plain jane in comparison, with a rather large size despite its "slim proportions" and a lack of detailing in styling to make it really pop. But, of course, who needs all that featurephone nonsense when you've got the X1 staring 'em all down? We got to twiddle around with an out-of-battery Xperia for a minute, and it's certainly one of the thickest and heaviest phones headed for the market in the near future -- though the upside of that is some glorious build quality, an immense WVGA screen and an expansive, highly touchable keyboard. SE certainly does seem to have something for everybody, but with Moto apparently working on an 8 megapixel camera of its own, and touchscreen rivals to the X1 hogging all the spotlight, SE's isn't looking at an easy road to bumping back that profitability. Oh, and in case you were interested, the gallery below also includes the W760 sporting a black finish, a pink-ish red-ish W580 and the wonderfully tiny W350i.

The Sony Ericsson W980

Sony Ericsson has plumped up its Walkman line just a tad today with the introduction of the W980, a pretty well power-packed flip sporting 8GB of internal storage, a generously sized external display, and something the company calls "Walkman on Top." The technology (if you can really call it that) replicates the music player interface in its entirety on the external display, allowing full player control without popping the phone open. Other goodies include an FM transmitter and PlayNow support -- a Walkman phone through and through, if we do say so ourselves. Look for it to launch in Q3 in quadband EDGE flavor with HSDPA 2100 (read: no good for use in the US). Sorry about the microscopic photo, by the way, SE's site is having difficulty at the moment.

Hands-on with Sony Ericsson's W760

Of Sony Ericsson's three handsets launches today, the Walkman-branded W760 holds the most promise of landing over here thanks to its healthy dose of HSDPA in all the flavors we love. This slider is definitely well put together and felt rather hefty -- in an altogether pleasant way -- while we played with it during our brief visit this afternoon, though we could definitely find some room for improvement for the keys on the front. Nothing mind blowing, but we like the addition of GPS, the slider keypad is top notch, and being able to control the preloaded racing game by just rocking the phone, well, rawked. We're hoping we'll have some provider news in the near future, but until then, enjoy the gallery.

Sony Ericsson announces W760 Walkman slider

Though Sony Ericsson already has a couple phones out with support for North American 3G, you're feasting your eyes on the first and only Walkman branded handset to feature the sacred 850 and 1900MHz bands of HSDPA action. The W760 slider features quadband EDGE plus triband HSDPA, integrated GPS, FM radio, 3.2 megapixel camera, Memory Stick expansion, stereo speakers, and support for the "SensMe" technology recent handsets from the company have been rocking, allowing users to simply shake the phone to control music playback. No word on pricing, but it should launch in the second quarter of the year.

Sony Ericsson intros K660, W380 and W890 handsets

Right on cue, Sony Ericsson's busted out a trio of new handsets today, including it's latest K-series model, the K660, and a pair of new Walkman phones: the W380 and W890. As we knew yesterday, the K660 is a HSDPA handset whose big selling point is its proficiency at web browsing, including a landscape mode, among other web-friendly features. The W380 clamshell phone, on the other hand, drops the 3G, but provides plenty of the usual Walkman-related features, including gesture control, and SE's trademark Track ID, while the W890 ups things considerably with HSDPA connectivity and a better-than-the-norm 3.2 megapixel camera. Hit up the read link below for complete specs on each handset, and look for them all to be available in the first quarter of next year.

Sony Ericsson's W960 wanders through the FCC

We saw this back in June before official launch (thanks, Gracenote) and now we're seeing it being put through the proving grounds over at the FCC's HQ. While this won't change the fact that it's only tri-band GSM and 2100 MHz UMTS, we're still secretly pretty chuffed as this is a really hot handset -- that is, except for the really cheapo stylus. Here's hoping our pals over at Sony Ericsson sort a W960a for our HSDPA loving hands to enjoy. While this glossy beauty may not get offered up by any provider around these parts, it'll certainly work in a pinch.

Sony Ericsson W910 gets the hands-on treatment

We saw one of the newer editions in Sony Ericsson's Walkman line at CTIA today, the thin and lovely W910. We've seen this fella here and there, so we won't rehash what's under the hood, but suffice it to say we're suitably impressed. Oh, we're also happy to report that the loud bang we'd heard mentioned while opening the slide didn't seem to affect this unit.

More details surface on Sony Ericsson's W890i

The new Sony Ericsson W890i we saw late last month is getting a bit more fleshed out as the weeks trickle by. If you believe the spec sheet, it'll be available in maroon as well as the black pictured above, comes packing quad-band GSM, UMTS, and, wait for it, HSDPA at 850 MHz. How can this be? A Sony Ericsson handset with HSDPA that'll work on AT&T in the US and Rogers Wireless in Canada is a like a cellular dream come true. Sadly, internal memory disappoints at only 40 MB, though it can be bolstered by shelling out for some Memory Stick Micro (M2). Not much else new can be gleaned but we're hoping for pricing and a launch date soon.

Sony Ericsson W890i to make good on W880i's shortcomings?

A random Polish auction site probably isn't the first place we'd think to look for leaked prototype Sony Ericsson hardware, but heck, maybe it should be. This here stylish, brown, brushed metal candybar showed up recently on allegro.pl, bearing the telltale "SE123" badge on its rear and all the signs of a successor to the 9.4mm W880i: a listed 3.2 megapixel camera (up from the Ai's 2 megapixel piece), UMTS, 12mm case thickness, Memory Stick Micro M2 slot, and a slightly -- okay, significantly less ridiculous numeric keypad. You might argue that it's a step down in the looks department from its supposed predecessor, but with the better cam, better keypad, and we'd imagine a slightly tighter fit by launch, we're guessing it'll have a few takers. You didn't forget EDGE this time around, did you, Sony Ericsson?

Sony Ericsson's W580i Walkman lands on AT&T

Just weeks after Sony Ericsson's sexy W580i Walkman phone went live on Rogers, AT&T customers can now get their hands on the mobile, too. According to AT&T's own listing of the handset, this svelte slider will (obviously) tout a two-megapixel camera, video recording / playback, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a built-in pedometer, Memory Stick Micro support, quad-band connectivity, and even PacMan / Ms. PacMan games (huzzah!). You can snap it up right now for $269.99 sans a contract, or $79.99 after inking your name to a two-year agreement and waiting for a pesky rebate to return.

Sony Ericsson's W910 gets previewed

Most wouldn't disagree that Sony Ericsson's W910 sure has the look, but how sexy does it remain after handling it for a few? The (lucky) folks over at PhoneArena were able to spend a few precious moments with SE's latest Walkman handset, and here's the low-down thus far. First off, the prototype they played with "would likely see changes" before its final release, which would certainly be beneficial considering the "relatively loud bang" heard when sliding it open, the need for more contrast on the display, and the somewhat tiny buttons. Still, the overall vibe on this one seemed generally (albeit not overwhelmingly) positive, and while it's easy to get stuck in the details, you're still better off waiting for a final review before cementing any judgments in your mind. Peep the video preview after the jump.

A closer look at Sony Ericsson's W910 and W960

With six handsets, three new Bluetooth watches, and an array of new accessories and peripherals, Sony Ericsson went for broke with today's announcement (heck, we'd go so far to say that they should've teased even a little more than they did). Obviously that's a lot to digest, so we wanted to zoom in on the W910 and W950 -- the company's newest and fanciest Walkman-branded units -- and take a look at just what it is that sets them apart. Read on for details.

Sony Ericsson's "Next Big Thing" coming June 14th

So, remember the rumor that June 14th would see the launch of some major new handsets from Sony Ericsson? Right, well consider it a fact now that SE has issued a formal invitation to "the next big thing" event in Berlin to "celebrate the latest developments in Sony Ericsson Music and Imaging." Of course, now the rumor mill is churning with speculation over which phones will launch. According to a veteran Esato forum jockey, SE will be announcing the HSDPA 850 Sofia packing a 5 megapixel shooter along side the W950 Walkman successor dubbed the Maria/Mooi/W960 which touts 8GB of flash storage. There's also hope of seeing the HSDPA 850 Shinobu Walkman slider with music shaker feature -- tilt forward to skip to the next track, back to skip backwards, and shake it for a random track. Mark your calendars kids, it's going to be interesting.

Sony Ericsson's "Shinobu" Walkman slider in the wild?

Although none of this is confirmed by Sony Ericsson yet, it looks like we've got the first pics of their rumored 12.5-mm Shinobu Walkman slider. The specs remain unchanged with HSDPA, a 2 megapixel shooter with a second camera up front, and what appear to be gaming keys above the 2.4-inch QVGA display. No idea when this will be launched but rumor has it pegged for about $550 whenever it does hit.

Sony Ericsson W580 seen without Walkman branding

OK, enough is enough, Sony Ericsson really has to get some handsets launched as the speculation on what seems like 20 handsets is really making it hard for us to keep up. The latest not-yet-released-are-we-making-you-crazy-yet handset is what appears to be a twin to the recently announced W580i Walkman phone. We have seen this in the interesting green on black theme and in the traditional Walkman-style orange on white (or is that white on orange?). No official word on what the real name will be or what it may eventually be packing (if this is indeed real and not a W580 prototype), but rumor has it that it may be an "E" series handset. As per usual, we will fill in the blanks as we learn more about it.
