Pantech IM-S230 swipes "world's thinnest slider" crown

In the dog-eat-dog world of cellphone manufacturing, a millimeter of thickness can make all the difference -- the difference between producing some generic, brand X handset that no one gives two flips about, and crafting "the world's thinnest slider" to a deluge of fanfare. The "world's thinnest" titles tend to get passed around pretty frequently -- particularly among the Korean manufacturers as they work overtime to rapidly one-up each other -- though we're not too sure how much longer this can carry on. Pantech's new IM-S230 clocks in at an astonishing 9.9 millimeters thick, a far cry from the world's thinnest phone, but extraordinarily impressive when you learn that the S230 is a slider (sorry, Samsung!). Features include a 1.3 megapixel camera, media player, document viewer, and DMB TV reception on a 2.2 inch display. Look for it for around $535 in white or black when it launches.

Samsung unleashes SGH-E950, SGH-E840, and SGH-J600

In a refreshing change of pace from Samsung's traditional black-slab design, we bring you this trio of hotness: the SGH-E950, SGH-E840, and SGH-J600 pictured above left-to-right. All are on display right now at ComnunicAsia and ready to ship in Southeast Asia before July is up. Of the three, only the E840 has a shot of making it Stateside with its quadband GSM, EDGE radios packed into the world's slimmest 10.6-mm slider. It features a 2 megapixel camera and up to 2GB of MicroSD to store your media. Nice and all but we'd love to get out hands on the tri-band GSM E950 instead. That black box on the face is actually a touch-sensitive display which fills itself with a variety of icons depending upon how the phone is being used. Interestingly, the FCC approved J600's main claim to fame is its "intense hues" of "mystical colors" like, say "dark gray" -- riiight, and dreary office cubicles are just tiny magical kingdoms for gifted marketing drones.

Samsung's Ultra Edition 10.9 to oust D900 as "world's slimmest slider"

Witnessing the dethroning of one crown thanks to a determined competitor is anything but surprising, but it seems that Samsung is ousting one of its own in order to make room for a newer champion, as the Ultra Edition 10.9 takes over where the D900 left off as the "world's thinnest slider." Continuing on Samsung's recent infatuation with creating increasingly slim mobiles, the 10.9's biggest feature is its ultrathin frame, as the spec list really doesn't deviate from what we found on the previous title holder. Onboard, you'll find a 3.2-megapixel camera, MP3 / video playback, Bluetooth, video output, 80MB of internal memory, and a built-in microSD slot for loading up additional media. Little more is known about the 10.9 as of now, but just about every detail you could need should be divulged during the 3GSM Congress in Barcelona next month.

Samsung breaking own record with Ultra Edition 5.9

In the cellphone game, just how thin is too thin? If you're Samsung, the answer apparently lies somewhere south of the 5.9 millimeters put up by its latest fashion accessory, the appropriately named "Ultra Edition 5.9." For the record, that's a solid millimeter less than the previous world's thinnest, Samsung's own X820 -- the phone allegedly shown snapping helplessly in two on video under fairly minimal pressure. Of course, the authenticity of said video has been repeatedly called into question, but either way, we're hoping this new one has been fabbed with some pretty crazy space-age resins and polymers that'll keep it from multiplying in our pockets. Specs include a tri-band GSM radio (though recent announcements have us encouraged that an American version could be down the pike), a 3.2 megapixel cam, Bluetooth, and 80MB of onboard storage. Look for the record-smashing Ultra Edition 5.9 to start gracing European pockets bulge-free some time in March.

[Thanks, Tony]

The SCH-B590: Samsung shoots for another "world's thinnest"

True, it's a full 9.6mm thicker than their paper-thin X820, but believe it or not, that's still apparently thin enough for Samsung to claim their SCH-B590 is the world's thinnest phone with DMB. As you might expect, you give up some goodness to minimize the bulge in your pocket; the SCH-B590 gets off with a measly 1.3-megapixel cam, not to mention a fairly pedestrian clamshell design -- none of that rotating slider nonsense here. Expect the B590 to drop on Korea's SK Telecom for around 500,000 won (about $520).

Korea to get 6.9mm Samsung X820 as SPH-V9900

The "world's thinnest" phone, Samsung's SGH-X820, is a little piece of Korea that much of the world can get its hands on -- but not to worry, folks, they're gonna do a little something special just for their home crowd, too. Re-released in Korea as the SPH-V9900, the handset looks to sport a veritable cornucopia of button icons not found on its international sibling, but more importantly (depending on who you ask, anyway) the V9900 will be offered in a wider variety of colors. So if owning a powder blue phone that virtually disappears when you hold it sideways is your calling in life, it's time to pack your bags folks; your device is only half a world away.

FCC smiles upon Samsung SGH-D900, world's thinnest slider

If the true measure of a company was the thickness of its products, Samsung would have a lock on the title. Besides the "world's thinnest phone" -- the SGH-X820 that you can virtually hide by turning it on its side -- our South Korean friends are rocking the "world's thinnest slider" as well in the SGH-D900. Apparently, the FCC is cool with that, as they've just given the thumbs-up for the D900 stateside. The phone manages to pack in some reasonable specs despite its size, bringing a QVGA display, 3.13 megapixel camera, A2DP, 80MB flash, and MicroSD expansion to the table. Most importantly for our US readers, this is a quad-band EDGE phone, meaning there might be some actual weight to the FCC grant for a change of pace.

Samsung unveils "world's thinnest" 6.9mm phone

Always one for a decent "world's ____" tag line for their product releases, Samsung is naming their new SGH-X820 Ultra Slim Phone the "world's thinnest" at a mere 6.9mm (0.27-inches) thick, the same thickness as the iPod nano. Not content to be merely skinny, the candybar phone also features a 2 megapixel camera, MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity and TV out. There is a minor hump near the top of the phone off the back that might sully your results when using this thing to pick door locks, but otherwise it's hard to imagine how it can get much thinner than this and still have a claim to 3D space. The phone should be out in Europe and Russia this week, with China to follow in June, no word on price.
