T-Mobile rolls deep with designer Sidekicks for charity

T-Mobile teamed up a while back with a bunch of fashionistas to design elaborately redone Sidekick 3s to benefit Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, an organization raising money to benefit breast cancer causes worldwide to the tune of some $40 million since its inception in 1994. The results are in -- and while we can't comment on the usability or aesthetic goodness of what we're seeing, we've got to stay focused on the fact that it's all going to a very worthy group. Some of the names on the list of participating designers are big enough to drive prices way up on the auctions, we'd imagine, which all end today. So go place that massively generous bid of yours, and if anyone can figure out what the heck is going on with the Duckie Brown one, do let us know!

T-Mobile Sidekick 3 users to get mobile MySpace

Once an exclusive Helio playground, MySpace may be coming soon to a T-Mobile Sidekick 3 near you. From initial reports, T-Mobile's MySpace app will allow profile editing, picture uploading, comments and the sending and receiving of MySpace messages. From a mobile perspective, that's pretty complete coverage, yes? The T-Mobile Sidekick MySpace app will keep you logged into MySpace constantly so that all those friend alerts and other socially pressing issues will pop up on that Sidekick screen in real-time. The new MySpace app will apparently come standard on the upcoming Sidekick Zante and will also be available to current Sidekick 3 customers at a later date.

Sidekick iD reviewed

A Sidekick for the low price of $99 is enough to get any Danger fan excited -- but just what do you give up in exchange for the price break? That's precisely what T-Mobile is about to push out the door to give the cash-starved (and the frugal) among us a taste of the older, higher end Sidekick 3. LAPTOP Magazine had the chance to sit down and put the iD through its paces, pointing out the glaring lack of MP3 playback, camera, Bluetooth, and expandable memory. On the flipside, though, what's left is still Sidekick through and through: a messaging focus, mobile web surfing and the typical Hiptop form factor that makes voice calling just a tad awkward. More is lacking in the iD, though -- the lack of even 2.5G EDGE data is going to make serious surfing an exercise in frustration. Are there any old-school GPRS fans out there still? We thought not, but there probably are a few Sidekick-for-$100 fans. All told, LAPTOP was digging the myFaves integration (you're next, Sidekick 3 users) but found the nixed features a little tough to swallow, suggesting folks might be better served saving up a little extra coin for the 3 or a Motorola Q to get mobile multimedia done right.

T-Mobile's D-Wade Sidekick 3 now available

In case you haven't yet found a T-Mobile Sidekick 3 that is customized to your liking, the GSM carrier now is making a special edition (yes, another one) available now "with design by NBA star Dwayne Wade." While D-Wade's name is on this unit, we doubt he got into the cellphone design biz outside of the colors and ringtones this puppy will sport. Anywho, this Sidekick 3 is the same except for certain color choices on the exterior and some other custom stuff (drop us a line with what you see if you've played with one of these). If you've been holding out for a faux gold-encrusted Sidekick 3, here's your chance.

T-Mobile officially announces Dwayne Wade Sidekick 3

If you're not a huge fan of the Miami Heat, you're probably not all stoked to hear the firm details about T-Mobile and Danger's latest Sidekick 3 variant, the Dwyane Wade (or D-Wade, as it were) Edition. As we know by now, nothing else differs about this one from its other flavorless and flavored editions, but for the D-Wade obsessed it could be a must-have. Snag yours starting February 21st.

D-Wade Limited Edition Sidekick 3 for ballers

If high-fashion isn't your thing, and baby tree urban camo doesn't cut it with you, but you still want to get in on some of this Limited Edition Sidekick 3 action, then you might be interested in T-Mobile's upcoming D-Wade edition. Apparently "Flash" has been an avid Sidekick user since 2004, and was personally involved in the new design, drawing on styles from luxury cars and Miami's South Beach. Turns out the number 3 is a big thing for Dwayne as well, given that whole jersey number thing and years-in-the-NBA thing, so he's made sure to highlight the numeral in gold. The back of the limited edition has "realistic basketball texturing" for increased comfort, grip and sexay, but like always with these limited editions, there isn't really a whole lot else going on here. No word on a release date, the current info we have was leaked onto the internets in PDF, but we're guessing we'll be seeing this thing hit retail sooner rather than later. Check some more pics after the break.

Sidekick 3 sportin' the iPhone theme

First, we caught a Windows Mobile phone posing as the iPhone and now its the Sidekick's turn at it. It appears that one user, with a lot of time on his hands, decided to trick out his SK3 with an iPhone theme (right down to the the fish screensaver.) We think it looks interesting -- just too bad that Danger-sized display doesn't give him much room to work with. Now, everyone take a guess on how long it will take the folks in Cupertino to sue him, OK?

Got cash in the new phone budget? Do some good

'Tis the season for giving, which leaves the rabid phone fans among us in a tight spot: how do we get in on a little new mobile tech for ourselves and help those less fortunate at the same time? Our friends over at Phone Scoop are hoping to fill the bill by auctioning off a handful of hot, current handsets graciously provided by carriers and manufacturers with all proceeds going to benefit The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria -- the same fund (RED) benefits. Loot includes a T-Mobile Dash, LRG Sidekick 3, Motorola MOTOKRZR K1, unlocked Samsung i320, M500 for Sprint, and BlackJack, and a Helio Drift (see, we told you the goods were hot). Bidding will take place via Phone Scoops' forums, with all auctions ending this Friday. Bid generously, and bid to win!

Sidekick 3 hits the UK

The UK might be flush with UMTS, but for a change of pace, here's one hotly-anticipated device just now launching east of the pond that doesn't do 3G. The Sidekick 3 has been kicking around for a few months here on T-Mobile's US network (along with a couple of its fashion-savvy siblings) and they've finally seen fit to prep it for a European launch, offering Brits all the same screen-spinning, trackball-having, QWERTY-typing action that we've been enjoying. The feature list is identical as best we can tell, leaving only the exact release date in question -- expect it some time in December.

T-Mobile's Sidekick 3 limited editions from LRG and Diane von Furstenberg

Like we'd been hearing, T-Mobile is going all designer label on us with a couple of new Sidekick 3 looks. Last time, with the Sidekick II, they nabbed Juicy Couture and Mr. Cartoon to do the honors, and this time around we've got designs from Lifted Research Group (LRG), which is rocking a baby tree camo motif, and from Diane von Furstenburg which is sporting a "black is the new black" paintjob and some signature hot-pink number keys. Both phones also sport a bit of customized graphics for the phone interface itself, but otherwise the two limited edition Sidekicks remain largely unchanged. What we don't expect to remain unchanged is the price, but T-Mobile isn't saying exactly what yet -- we expect at least a $50 bump. Both phones should be available online and select retail stores on October 30th. Head on over to Engadget for the full-size pr0n.

LRG limited edition Sidekick 3 surfaces

T-Mobile promised there'd be at least a couple different limited edition versions of the Sidekick 3 when they announced the phone this past summer, and it looks like one is due out soon. Reader Andy scanned this pic from the November issue of XXL magazine that shows a green version of the SK3 from Lifted Research Group. No word on pricing (or a release date), but T-Mob charged a premium for those limited edition Sidekick II's, so expect this one to cost at least fifty bucks more than the regular version.

Custom backgrounds on your Sidekick 3

Where there's a will, there's usually a way. Sidekick 3 owners miffed about being trapped inside Danger's walled garden of content will be happy to know that some resourceful peeps have managed to drop custom backgrounds and themes on their units -- and it appears to be a pretty simple process, to boot. Modify a text file, drop a few images via USB, and you're good to go. At least until Danger decides to patch to get you non-conformists back in line, that is.

Sidekick 3 wipes credit cards?

Apparently, the magnet used to latch the screen on the Sidekick 3 can hold a fork captive, leading some guys with a credit card reader to ask the obvious question: what happens if a magnetic data stripe passes in harm's way? Sho' nuff, it looks like you get a bricked card. Of course, the number can still be read and typed in, but stay with us, folks -- the point is that the closed Sidekick ate the stripe in less than a second of exposure. We're guessing most people aren't carrying their credit cards in their pocket along with their phone, but don't say you haven't been warned.

Sidekick 3 available to current T-Mobile customers

It pays to be a T-Mobile customer: while the rest of the country will have to endure nearly two more weeks of excruciating waiting to get their hands on a Sidekick 3 (well, except for us), current Mobbers have been snatching up the new device since it became available at one minute after midnight. Agreeing to a one-year contract extension will net you an SK3 for $350, while two more years of living the Mob life will knock off $50, and a "naked" unit will set you back an even $400.

Sidekick 3 fetches $4050 on eBay

Despite the fact that the long-anticipated official launch date is fast approaching, the demand for Sidekick 3s appears to be as hot as ever, with one lucky/crazy individual scoring one of the suckers for over four grand on eBay -- and it wasn't even a pimped out one. While the seller appears to be legit (no, it's not us), we can't say the zero feedback of the winning bidder inspires much confidence of him actually ever receiving a dime. But who knows, maybe it's some celebrity going incognito after failing to snag a freebie at the big launch party in LA last week.  Gotta fit in, you know.
