Sony Ericsson "Patti" phone shows itself, gets renamed W902

A single shot of Sony Ericsson's "Patti" candybar phone was apparently making the rounds earlier this week, but a helpful member of the SE4M forums has now thankfully provided a whole batch of pics, as well as word that the phone has now been officially dubbed the W902. Apart from the 5-megapixel autofocus camera with an LED flash, however, this one looks to be a pretty standard SE handset, with it boasting all the usual Walkman-related features and tried and true design you've come to expect. No word on a release just yet, but you can at least get a good look at it by hitting up the link below.

Sony Ericsson F305 gets toyed with, previewed

Press / in the wild shots still not enough for you? Fret not, friends, as CNET had a chance to spend a few quality minutes with Sony Ericsson's F305 slider and write up a few paragraphs of impressions. For starters, they seemed to prefer the white motif versus the black, and while a trio of games will reportedly be available to take advantage of the Motion Gaming controls, only a fishing title was on tap for demoing. It was noted that the phone required "vigorous shakes" in order to get the job done, and unfortunately, critics were less than enthused by how the game actually looked. Nevertheless, it's probably worth a visit to see if SE's next shaker has the chops to earn a spot in your handset collection.

Sony Ericsson births HBH-PV715, 720 and 740 Bluetooth headsets

Sony Ericsson's finishing off the onslaught today from Singapore with a trio of colorful Bluetooth headsets, perfect for anyone who doesn't mind talking straight ahead and receiving all sorts of weird glances from other patrons in the local mall. The HBH-PV715, HBH-PV720 and HBH-PV740 arrive in a variety of colors / patterns, boast at least 10-hours of talk time (and 700-hours in standby), and DSP / automatic volume adjustment. The units are aimed at value-driven, fashion-conscience and business-oriented consumers in order of mention, and while specifics (you know, like price) aren't stated, the trifecta will show up in "select markets" in Q4.

Sony Ericsson pops out MD400 / MD400g HSPA USB modems

In case you couldn't tell, Sony's getting down at CommunicAsia. Next up from Singapore is a fresh pair of HSPA USB modems, the MD400 and GPS-packin' MD400g. Both sticks pull double duty as a M2 / microSD card reader, but it's not like we haven't seen that functionality tossed into similar units already. Nevertheless, these buggers support 7.2Mb/s download and 2.0M/bs upload speeds and feature a swiveling antenna to complement the built-in one, a retractable USB connector and compatibility with Windows and OS X-based machines. SE tells us that the currently unpriced duo will be available worldwide in Q4, with the biggest decision to come when choosing between Exquisite Ebony and Lustrous White.

Patent pair: SE puts radar in mobiles, Nokia plays with new designs

We came across a pair of phone patents today so patently palatable that we couldn't help but dish 'em out together. First up is Sony Ericsson's bright idea to shove radar in cellphones. According to the application, the built-in technology could work hand-in-hand with the GPS module and camera to obtain a position, calculate distance to target, determine position / speed of said target using Doppler analysis and present the finalized information to the owner. Over on Nokia's side, the firm has apparently been working on a number of new designs and UI tweaks, even going so far as to draw up a handset with an integrated kickstand. Check out the links below if you're hungry for more where this came from.

Sony Ericsson patent app details LCD watch hands

Considering the hordes of utterly unsightly timepieces that find their way into our browsers, we've got to hand it to Sony Ericsson -- it's done a pretty fine job at keeping its name attached to watches that are, you know, wearable. That being said, we're not surprised to see such an intriguing patent app surface from the aforementioned firm, and honestly, we'd be even less shocked if this thing eventually went beyond the drawing board. As the picture above partially demonstrates, SE has envisioned a watch with LCD hands along with an LCD display resting behind 'em, theoretically enabling the hands to "vanish" while users peek a quick video or read a text message on the screen beneath. Call us crazy, but we're pretty sure even the likes of Bond and Tracy would approve of this.

Sony Ericsson cameraphones could support gesture control

Generally speaking, the cameras that come built in to today's mobiles are less than astounding, but a recent Sony Ericsson patent application could make 'em a bit more worthwhile. The patent describes a scenario where a user could input commands by simply gesturing in front of the lens, and the phone would then be able to decode certain actions and react accordingly. Apparently, one could answer a phone (in handsfree fashion, of course) from across the room with just a flick of the wrist, and tracks streaming over Bluetooth could be controlled by waving your hands like you just don't care. Granted, users would still have to be where the handset could see them, but aside from that, the idea's not too shabby.

Keepin' it real fake, part XCVIV: the edible Sony Ericsson K850i edition

We love when people appreciate a mobile enough to immortalize it via sugary sculpture and this seems to be the case for this Sony Ericsson K850i created by Michelle Wibowo of Michellecakes for Carphone Warehouse. We've seen keepin' it real fake cake before, but this is far "sweeter" and definitely "takes the cake" -- all puns intended and double quoted for those that missed them, and yeah, we know -- for attention to detail. We're not sure about the back story here, but suffice it to say we really don't care as we're more interested in how we can get a slice of K850i and find something cool to have sculpted for us. Any ideas friends?

[Thanks, Michael]

Sony Ericsson's W580i peeped in new Metro Pink flavor

Not much new about this one friends, except for the new candy floss pink look this W580i is sporting. It would seem that Sony Ericsson has seen fit to push the Metro Pink W580i out in time for the holidays and can already be had in Taiwan. No word on pricing yet, but we suspect you'll be able to hit up your fav' eBay seller any moment if you are just dying to stuff a stocking with its glorious pinkness.

Sony Ericsson announces plans for PlayNow Arena service

It sure looks like Sony Ericsson is keeping itself busy these days, with the company now following up word of its latest hardware with an announcement of its plans for its upcoming PlayNow Arena service. That, as you can probably guess, is an upgraded version of the company's existing PlayNow service, although it seems that it'll be a good deal more than just a music service. There will still be plenty of goodies on that front, however, including the TrackID service mentioned on those new handsets, which'll let you identify a snippet of music off the radio and then grab it straight off the PlayNow Arena service. Even more interestingly, Sony Ericsson says that Arena will be an "open multimedia platform" that "welcomes everyone," which it says will lead to an even wider range of games and other "mobile entertainment experiences." It also promises to be compatible with a "wide range" of Sony Ericsson phones, although the company isn't getting much more specific than that at the moment. Expect to hear plenty more in the coming months, however, with the service itself set to roll out in "selected markets" in the second quarter of next year.

Sony Ericsson intros K660, W380 and W890 handsets

Right on cue, Sony Ericsson's busted out a trio of new handsets today, including it's latest K-series model, the K660, and a pair of new Walkman phones: the W380 and W890. As we knew yesterday, the K660 is a HSDPA handset whose big selling point is its proficiency at web browsing, including a landscape mode, among other web-friendly features. The W380 clamshell phone, on the other hand, drops the 3G, but provides plenty of the usual Walkman-related features, including gesture control, and SE's trademark Track ID, while the W890 ups things considerably with HSDPA connectivity and a better-than-the-norm 3.2 megapixel camera. Hit up the read link below for complete specs on each handset, and look for them all to be available in the first quarter of next year.

Sony Ericsson's K630 gets official in black and gold

Just in case two recently announced Sony Ericsson mobiles weren't enough for one day, along comes the K630 to quell your grumbling. This handset sports a slightly less impressive feature set than the other two newcomers, but it ought to put a noticeably smaller dent in your wallet to compensate. Nevertheless, the K630 will be available in Havana Gold and Quick Black and will feature HSDPA, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync preloaded, a two-megapixel camera, 256MB M2 card, built-in Media Browser, an FM tuner, support for MP3 / AAC / WMA formats, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, video recording at 15fps and USB connectivity. Mum's the word on pricing at the moment, but look for it to land in "select markets" during Q4. Check out a video of the device right over here.

Sony Ericsson's president steps down, apparently on good terms

Leaving analysts just a little baffled, Sony Ericsson president Miles Flint has stepped down after three years of fairly successful leadership. The consensus among members of the financial community seems to be that there's absolutely no way Flint was forced out; under his command, Sony Ericsson has seen consistent profitability and a steady increase in its market share (North America excepted, we might passive-aggressively note). The ex-prez says that he's looking to expand his horizons after 17 years under the Sony and Sony Ericsson brands, while Sony Electronics USA chairman Hideki Komiyama has been tapped to fill the huge shoes left behind. Analysts seem pretty convinced that he'll have a tough time doing any better than his predecessor, noting that low-end handsets seem like the next logical step to market share dominance despite the segment's virtually nonexistent margins. Might we recommend more North American love, Komiyama-san?

Sony Ericsson's W580i Walkman lands on AT&T

Just weeks after Sony Ericsson's sexy W580i Walkman phone went live on Rogers, AT&T customers can now get their hands on the mobile, too. According to AT&T's own listing of the handset, this svelte slider will (obviously) tout a two-megapixel camera, video recording / playback, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a built-in pedometer, Memory Stick Micro support, quad-band connectivity, and even PacMan / Ms. PacMan games (huzzah!). You can snap it up right now for $269.99 sans a contract, or $79.99 after inking your name to a two-year agreement and waiting for a pesky rebate to return.

Keepin' it real fake, part LXXII: Sudoku handheld resembles Sony Ericsson phone

It's one thing to long for Sudoku on your handset, but to pick up a Japanese look-a-like trinket that handles the former yet omits any calling abilities just seems silly. Nevertheless, this interesting handheld purportedly allows brainiacs to whittle the day away with Sudoku puzzles, and while it sure looks eerily similar to a-many of Sony Ericsson's mobiles, there's no reception onboard. Of course, it is only ¥980 ($8.54), so it's not like the manufacturer is really trying to dupe anybody -- right?
