Prototype iControlPad proves itself on video


Hah, did you really have the nerve to doubt CraigIX? The iPhone gamepad add-on that we heard about just last week is already inching closer to reality, and there's a video to prove it. In the somewhat unexciting clip posted up after the jump, you'll see a PCB mockup of the device doing its thang, though it's quite inelegant in its current form. If you just needed one more something to boost your interest / confidence that this critter was real, you know where to head.

Zeemote JS1 brings analog gaming to your Bluetooth-enabled handset


We had an opportunity to play with Zeemote's -- this name is somehow familiar -- JS1 mobile joystick at MWC this week and while we first thought it a bit kitschy, it's actually a pretty amazing little device. Zeemote supplies an API to game developers and in short order -- apparently anyway -- the game can adapted to use the Bluetooth-enabled JS1as a controller. The device features an analog joystick and four user configurable triggers for control in a really comfortable controller that is small enough to pop into a pocket when not being used. The best bit is that it's not a gimmick, it works, and really well. We checked out the Heli game shown in the picture above and the JS1 really made the game fun to play. Games such as Tomb Raider, Hellstrike 3D, and Sonic have already been ported and we hope more to come, no word on pricing but we're not expecting this to be a pricey toy. Samsung files patent for joystick phone


Making a grab for our adult wallets by aiming for our childlike love of video games, Samsung has recently filed a patent for a clamshell cellphone which can transform into a 2600-style controller. Last time we checked, killing at "Snake" on our phone wasn't so difficult that we needed to collapse or otherwise totally re-jigger the device to play it, but as mobile games become increasingly complex, using the keypad is starting to feel just a little limiting -- and that's where Samsung's engineers step in. The basic premise is that the bottom half of your flip-phone would pivot not only open and closed (or backward and forward), but also left and right, thus allowing you to escape from Blinky more quickly, jump over barrels more deftly, and generally get a serious game on.

Get your mobile phone game on -- with pop-out joysticks


Talk about a concept whose time has come -- the pop-out joystick for mobile phones. From initial research, this design gets pressed in and turned to allow the 'enter' button in the middle of the d-pad to actually protrude from the handset for all those times when, you know, you need more tactile control of those J2ME or Mophun games -- hey, you might even feel like you're on a PS3 (not). Regardless, this is an extra-cool development for the mobile space. For anything more than phone menu navigation (ahem, mobile gaming), we for one hope this concept comes to light in future mobiles, because you haven't lived unless you've fragged some folks on that 2 inch screen.
