Keepin' it real fake, part CXCII: the Toshiba G450, for some reason

Well, now we know what Toshiba was up to when it released that wacky G450 HSDPA modem / cellphone hybrid -- it was an overt challenge to see if even the silliest products would be copied by the Shenzhen KIRF outfits. A challenge that's been met with vigor, it seems: check out the "M688" here, which has all of the G450's useless control layout with even less functionality -- it can't be used as a modem. $66 is all it takes to convince your friends you've totally lost it.

After a flurry of leaks and announcements caught our attention last year, we've heard nary a peep from Toshiba about its multi-faceted device since. Suffice to say that's it's out in parts of Europe and countries with a penchant for the backward "R" and "N." Great, but what is it and how well does it do what it does; that's the convoluted question. Fortunately, IntoMobile went hands on with the USB memory stick / alarm clock with snooze / MP3 player / 7.2Mbps HSDPA USB modem / tri-band GSM cellphone and came away with the opinion that "the device is excellent." It pulled a respectable 2.7Mbps off O2's UK network and performed reasonably well as a "backup phone." The 160MB of storage for MP3 / AAC music playback was disappointing but it served its purpose in a pinch. Still, that's a lot of device for £140.

Toshiba gets official with Portege G910, G710 and G450 phones

We already caught sight of shiny little number pictured above these thanks to the generous folks at the FCC, but Toshiba's just now gotten official with it, along with two along with two that we haven't seen, but heard about in the company's 2008 roadmap. That one above is the Portege G910, a follow-up to the company's G900, which packs a 3-inch WVGA display, a 2 megapixel camera, Windows Mobile 6 and tri-band 900/1800/1900 GSM/EDGE support, in addition to 2100 HSDPA. If that's not your thing, you can also look forward to the Blackberry-esque G710 (pictured after the break), which boasts GPS but no 3G, and the rather, um, unique-looking G450 "modem phone" (also after the break), which boasts 3G but no GPS (among other differences). Look for all three to hit Europe in March, with the G910, G710 and G450 running roughly $880, $440 and $290, respectively.
