LG's Viewty Smart shipping this month, 12MP smartphone "later this year"

We've yet to see anything roll across LG's official wire, but oodles of legitimate UK sources are now reporting that LG's hotly anticipated Viewty Smart is making its way out to Orange shops. Strangely, it seems as if pricing details are still being held captive (really? at this point?), but we fully anticipate at least a small premium for 8 megapixels in a phone. Oh, and if you really needed any more affirmation that a 12 megapixel smartphone was in the works from this company, LG also took the opportunity to nod its head and promise one for "later this year." Goodie, goodie.

Samsung to release 12 megapixels of cameraphone foolishness this month?

It's been a few years since Samsung unleashed its 10 megapixel cameraphone onto the world. Now we're hearing that Samsung will push the limits of absurdity to a full 12 megapixels "this month," likely at Mobile World Congress. The phone is expected to hit the production lines in February with a European debut shortly thereafter. No details are provided other than the picture above used (but not attributed) by Unwired View. If this is the unannounced phone then we can obviously expect GPS geotagging, DivX video capture, and WiFi with DLNA support. One thing is clear: Samsung thinks that Europeans are pixel braggarts with little concern for image quality.

Update: Nope, that image is just a Photoshop of an 8 megapixel Innov8 -- still, we wouldn't be surprised to see the same feature set and industrial design in a 12 megapixel handset.

Samsung Omnia becomes first DivX Certified handset in USA

Samsung's Omnia is far from being the first handset in its stable to grab the coveted DivX Certified badge, but it is the first with said badge to ship in the United States of America. What's it all mean? Pretty simple, really -- those lured in by the Omnia's boyish good looks and seductive touchpanel will have no issues playing back DivX video files on the 3.2-inch screen, regardless of whether those files are stored on the 8GB of internal space or on a microSD card. We probably speak for DivX fans across the web when we say that this is hopefully just the beginning of a long list of DivX-friendly phones to come stateside.

LG's 5 megapixel KF750 with DivX rebranded Secret, shhh

LG's KF750 was just announced official-like by the non-rioting folks at Lucky Goldstar. With it, we get the official specs courtesy of, uh, Photography Blog. Why is a site for digital photogs carrying a cellphone press release, you ask? Easy, this one's got a 5 megapixel camera with face recognition and the ability to shoot DivX video at 120fps. A member of LG's Black Label series, the 11.8-mm slider is the thinnest 5 megapixel cameraphone on the market. Unfortunately the press release is heavy on fluff and light on specs so we can only tell you that it'll also be sporting a touch-screen, suite of mobile Google apps, and Bluetooth when it makes its European debut sometime this year, presumably, for an unknown price.

Update: A few more details are rolling in: 2.4-inch display, haptic feedback, and available in May.

Samsung F500 Ultra Video officially becomes DivX-certified

Although Samsung dropped the news on its newer F500 handset becoming the "world's first" DivX-certified handset when it was launched a few moons ago, DivX has made that statement certifiable, as the video codec and tech company announced today that the Samsung SGH-F500 "Ultra Video" would be the "world's first" handset with official DivX certification. If you've been waiting to get all those DivX movies and, umm, TV shows onto your handset for portable handset viewing, the Sammy F500 may be your ultimate golden handset, at least for 2007 or so. So, it's official -- let the DivX video start pouring from that F500 (when you get one, that is).
