Achtung, T-Mobile: if Project Dark is $50 unlimited, you're in trouble

Put yourself in T-Mobile USA's shoes for a moment: rumor has it that the guys who pay the bills aren't happy. History, happenstance, and the realities of electromagnetics have left you with an oddball 3G frequency that literally no other carrier in the world uses (at least, not for HSPA). Larger competitors don't take you as seriously as you'd like, and you don't have smaller ones -- they're all regionals who don't play in the same space you do. So what's your next move?

Nokia E63 getting goth makeover

The E63's always going to play second fiddle to its older, sexier brother, the E71 -- but it certainly doesn't help anyone take the phone seriously when it's only available in playful, non-neutral colors. Don't get us wrong, blue and red both suit this phone well -- but if you're going to take it into a board meeting, you might want something that's not going to turn heads and distract the suits from that fabulously interesting PowerPoint presentation on third-quarter financial projections. To that end, it seems that Nokia Europe is prepping a blacked-out version of the low-cost business device, though it's not clear when or where you might be able to pick it up. Speaking of blacked-out Nokias, you feeling any heat over there, E71x?

T-Mobile UK nabbing LG Arena KM900 in black

Just ten days after the LG Arena (or KM900, if you're the proper type) launched officially in Europe, T-Mobile UK has already moved in to snag some thunder with an exclusive color: black. Not like black handsets are hard to find or anything (in fact, we already knew this phone was shipping to someone in black), but we all know how giddy the world gets when something gets labeled as rare. Reportedly, the formal color name will be Titan Black, and outside of the new hue, everything else will remain the same. Check it later this month for free on Flext 40 and Combi 40 plans.

North American Nokia N85 gets remixed in black

Yes, the business end of the current N85 is black -- but for most North American buyers, flipping the thing around reveals a copper back. Stylish, yes -- nice, sure -- but it's not necessarily everyone's cup of tea. For you stealthier types, it seems that an all-black version is starting to circulate with retailers, featuring a light gray pattern on the back to complement the 5 megapixel cam. Seems that vendors are taking advantage of the situation and jacking the price of the new version just a tad, but just look at that beaut -- can you blame 'em?

Black Nokia N79 would be invisible, awesome in the dark

We'd previously seen all-black N79s make cameos on regional Nokia sites around the world, but now, we've got some in-the-wild shots to gander. In short, it's awesome -- the front is a refreshing, stealthy change from the white we're used to. Like its paler counterpart, this one includes three battery covers that presumably automatically change the phone's theme when attached, but this time around you've got a patterned silver, patterned black, and plain black cover to choose from. From the keypad, this appears to be a Taiwanese localized version of the phone, and we'd definitely stop short of saying this version's going to be available through European or American channels -- but on behalf of the world's spies, ninjas, secret operatives, and anyone else who needs camouflage in the cover of night, we're hoping it does.

Pantech Breeze gets remixed in black for AT&T

Looking for 3G, a wide VGA display, and a 5 megapixel cam? Well, friend, you've come to the wrong place -- but if you're looking for the drop dead simplest handset AT&T has to offer, the Breeze definitely has to make your short list. Following a white launch last year, Pantech's mega-simple clamshell for the older set has been redone in black, offering the same EDGE data, VGA camera, and one-touch "convenience keys" as the original. It's available starting today for $29.99 on contract.

Helio's Ocean 2 spotted in all black attire

While the Americanized version of Helio's Ocean 2 has gobs of red accents (thanks, Virgin Mobile!), many have wondered if an all black version would hit the scenes as well. Clearly, that answer is... well, maybe. A South Korean Helio page shows two variants of the newest Ocean, with one devoid of all those fiery accents. Obviously, we've no way to tell if this thing is ever coming to US soil, but this just might be the excuse you needed to hit up Seoul for an extended weekend.

Nokia E71 looking better than ever in red and all-black

Nokia's not pulling any punches about the fact that its seemingly business-oriented E71 serves double duty as one of the sexiest QWERTY devices ever to see retail, showing it off in two gorgeous new schemes: chrome / red and solid black. We've seen these before, but never in any official capacity; now that Nokia Europe's website has 'em in all their shiny glory, that seems to be a good sign that we'll be able to whip out our credit cards eventually. RIM, what do you say: an 8900 in red? Please?

All-black Nokia N96 now available for O2, and it's free on contract to boot

Nokia's N96 is a pretty boy, no question about it. But for those who prefer their gadgets to be murdered out, so to speak, this is the one you're after. To our knowledge, this is the very first all-black N96 offered up for sale, and if you're kosher with an 18 month contract with O2, you can get it right now for £zilch. Not bad, eh?

T-Mobile Dash now available in black, ninjas swoon

Alright, you've got to really love Dashes and really love the color black to make this investment, because it's now confirmed: the black Dash for T-Mobile is the same thing as the original, just with a little less raw aluminum involved. No 3G, no awesome camera, and at this point, we can't even tell if they've bumped it to WinMo 6.1 as rumored (though we'd certainly hope they did). It's available now for a penny shy of a Benjamin on contract after rebates.

Update: Commenter NocNocNoc tells us that it's still running 6.0, which makes this model just that much more anticlimactic. Bummer.

Black iPhone 3G vs. white iPhone 3G... fight!

For many people we encountered in line on launch day, the decision had already been steadfastly made: they'd be picking up a black iPhone 3G, and no one would sway them from their path (except maybe -- maybe -- if the black was sold out by the time their number got called). We've got to say, though -- after spending a great deal of quality time with both colors, the white definitely holds a special place in our hearts. It doesn't show smudges as easily, it makes just a little bit bolder of a fashion statement, and it tells passers-by, "yo, I sprung for the 16GB model" since the 8GB is only available in black. Don't get us wrong, the black's just fine, but we figured we'd throw out some food for thought on the subject.

Sliders, colors the themes with AT&T's new arrivals

That black LG Shine we'd heard AT&T would be picking up is finally starting to trickle into stores, along with a green rendition of the Sony Ericsson W580i -- a phone that's no stranger to new paint jobs. Neither device is up on AT&T's site yet, so as of now, it looks like the only way to pick these two up is going to be to mosey on down to your local retailer. Sorry, couch potatoes!

Black Centros in AT&T stores

Great news: the more business-friendly alternative to the white / green wild child is filtering into an AT&T store near you. Turns out that pre-production units were seen sporting both metallic and solid black paint jobs, but the final units are solid -- probably the best option, considering that this one will likely see time on a corporate boardroom table or two. Can't have those sparklies reflecting in the fluorescent lights, now can we?

AT&T release dates through May (hint: no Vu)

We've just received a fresh round of release dates on AT&T, and if we had to pick a single word to describe the theme here, it'd be "colors." Shades upon shades of phones -- both new and old -- will see a release on AT&T in the next couple of months, starting with the Sony Ericsson Z750a, the first 3G Sony Ericsson to be released by a carrier in the States (but not in North America -- that honor belongs to Rogers); it'll hit in your choice of gray, pink, or purple in early April. The now-ancient UTStarcom 5700 finally sees release toward the end of April more than a year after we first saw it in the FCC's business, giving a lower-end choice to the Windows Mobile faithful. Finally, May should bring about the LG CU720 Shine in black, following its initial offerings of silver and red.

Oh, and it looks like the Motorola Z9 and the black Centro should be widely available pretty much any minute now -- stay tuned. Strangely missing from the list is the Vu, though that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be released by the end of May, it merely means that AT&T's not sure yet. Surprise, surprise.

Nokia N82 gets blacked out for retail

Our sights are sort of irreparably set on the N78 and N96 at this point, but let's not forget a killer handset out of Espoo that's already launched, already available at retail, and holds its own in the technical arena: the N82. The 5 megapixel Nseries badass offers a candybar alternative to the N95, thanks to a 5 megapixel autofocus camera that's ready to take the place of your average point-and-shoot -- and the xenon flash actually one-ups the N95's weakling LED unit. We really liked the original pearlescent white when we saw it in the flesh with our very own eyes, but if you simply must have something just a little meaner looking, consider this: black. Yep, the N82's been relaunched in a rather menacing gloss black, and even better, it comes preloaded with the model's latest firmware that offers photo geotagging out of the box thanks to the phone's integrated GPS receiver. Grab it now for €400 (about $618).
