NEC shows off super resolution upconverting for your cell, HDTV and all in between

Let's face it, that low res cellphone video of last weekend's party and your Days of Thunder VHS won't be upscaling themselves, hence the sudden explosion of Super Resolution technology including this most recent entry from NEC. Claiming low power and memory requirements, part number uPD9245GJ is ready for duty blowing up images for display on your VGA cellphone or nav system without blurring, or upscaling low res sources to 1080p in a Blu-ray player or HDTV. Don't let the ridiculous soundtrack on the demo reel fool you -- recent reviews have given super resolution tech a thumbs up, and with Toshiba, Hitachi and Broadcom already in the game we've got a clue what feature will be checkmarked on your next electronics purchase.

ASUS P750 finally cracked to do owner's VGA bidding

Seriously, ASUS, what in the heck were you thinking? If you're going to imbue your P750 with a feature as hotly desired (particularly in the Windows Mobile world) as VGA resolution, what could possibly possess you to not merely gloss it over, but to artificially downgrade your high-end beauty to plain old QVGA? Blasphemy, we say -- and thankfully, some of the folks responsible for first noticing ASUS' indiscretion have come out and fixed it. Members Sorg and GreateVK from asusmobile.ru have crafted a rough fix, and say that a final version should be available to everyone within a week. If that's not an awesome (and unexpected) present to P750 users around the world, we don't know what is.

ASUS P750 secretly packing VGA resolution?

Here's one you may not have heard before: a manufacturer decides to stick a VGA touchscreen in some handset model not because it wants VGA resolution, but just because it got a killer deal on them. That's the rumor being floated on a handful of sites and forums about ASUS' monster P750 Windows Mobile 6 Professional device, with some sharp-eyed contributors noticing that each logical pixel on their devices' screens are actually comprised of -- count 'em -- four physical pixels. Indeed, a quick glance of the spec sheet for the alleged part number used reveals a "VGA/QVGA dual viewing mode," so the story seems to check out, and folks are apparently already hard at work enabling full 640 x 480 resolution on their beloved devices. i-mate reveals Ultimate 8502 and 9502: move over Kaiser

Well even though we have yet to see three of the five high-end Ultimate smartphones promised by i-mate earlier this year, the company has decided to reveal yet another pair of QWERTY-packing family members, including one -- the 9502 -- that gives the HTC Kaiser / TyTN II a run for its money. Almost identically-spec'ed to what is now the AT&T Tilt (save for the, um, tilt), the quad-band GSM / tri-band HSUPA Windows Mobile 6 handset manages to step up the game by featuring a VGA display along with video out, LED "flash," and standard 2.5-millimeter audio jack. Slightly less impressive but still pretty feature packed, the candybar-shaped Ultimate 8502 sports the same radios (including WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.0), memory configuration (256MB ROM / 128MB RAM) and 400MHz Qualcomm processor as its big brother, but replaces the 3.0 megapixel autofocus camera with a 2.0 megapixel fixed focus and, more importantly, drops the display down to a pedestrian 2.6-inch QVGA. Still, there's a lot to love here, but until we see some pricing and release dates, i-mate, we're not gonna go blending our current phones just yet.

HTC "Polaris" live pic?

It's about time that HTC's Artemis gets kicked to the curb and its replacement may well be the hot little set pictured above. Dubbed the Polaris -- we've heard rumblings and rumors since way back -- it stands out with Windows Mobile 6 Pro, a 3.5 inch VGA screen -- VGA, those three letters are music to our ears -- 256 / 128 MB ROM and RAM, GPS, 3 megapixel camera with autofocus, and quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE. HSDPA also figures here -- but will only be beaming to this set in the 2100MHz range -- with the rumored specs rounding out with a mention of a "digital compass" and FM radio. Release date seems pegged at October this year, let's hope that the deluge is set to start, we need some QWERTY sets with similar specs, like, yesterday.

Hands-on with ASUS' GPS-enabled P526

ASUS launched a new PDA / cellphone / GPS combo monster yesterday, so say "hello" to the non-3G ASUS P526 "Pegasus." We feel like we keep missing the holy grail of smartphones by a hair -- we can only hope the next arrival in the family will fill that 3G shortfall. The new kid on the block from ASUS does pack quite a kick otherwise, with quad-band EDGE connectivity, WiFi, 2 megapixel camera, and all of that loaded into a 115 gram package. The P526 sports a scroll wheel on the left side for easy one-handed control, and we are lovin' the GPS in the form of the SiRFStar III chipset, but saldly no word on bundled software in the deal. Since this is a new handset, we expected Windows Mobile 6 Professional and ASUS didn't disappoint on that front. Check the gallery for more shots of this little wonder.

Motorola teams up with Ferrari for MotoRAZR MAXX V6

Although it's passing the checkered flag quite a few laps later than the McLaren-branded handsets we've seen of late, Ferrari has utilized that long-standing partnership with Motorola to kick out a flashy limited edition MotoRAZR MAXX, dubbed the V6 Ferrari. Although it's not like Ferrari to stop with just six cylinders, this handset sports a sleek, black finish, an unmistakable yellow Ferrari logo, two-megapixel camera, VGA webcam for video telephony, 50MB of internal memory, microSD expansion slot, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, USB 2.0 connectivity, and "OTA PC syncing" to boot. Additionally, you'll find HSDPA, EDGE, and GPRS options, and for that extra luxurious touch, you'll hear an F1 "roar" each time you switch the device on, images of the Ferrari F430 engine on the mini external display, and a Ferrari automobile on the internal display. So if you've been scouting the perfect mobile to accompany that newly-purchased piece of Italian engineering, you can snag the MotoRAZR MAXX V6 Ferrari in five undisclosed (but fairly easy to guess) continents starting tomorrow, and while the €490 ($633) pricetag might turn off the average joe, at least you get a swank red leather carrying case to keep this thing in tip-top shape. Verizon Wireless to add Pantech 7075 to lineup

Maybe the KRZR K1m isn't in your budget or maybe you really don't care about what kind of cellphone you carry around. Verizon Wireless recognizes those run of the mill folk and is going to add another midtier phone to the lineup, the Pantech 7075. According to The Roc, the phone sports a 800 / 1900Mhz CDMA 1x and analog radio, has a VGA camera and a speakerphone; nothing to write home about, but then again, that's exactly what Verizon and Pantech are gunning for with this one. No word yet on pricing or availability so stay tuned! Check out another pic after the break.

Gigabyte's dual-tuner g-Smart i200

Though Gigabyte's not much of a mobile presence here in the US, folks in Asian countries might want to listen up: the spec sheet on their g-Smart i200 Pocket PC phone makes it sound like the best thing since... well, the i120 and i300. The 512MB of internal storage is hot, the promise of Crossbow (if it's available by the device's launch in Q1 '07) is pure gold -- but what's really got us all fired up are the integrated dual tuners (DVB-H and DVB-T) and 2.69-inch VGA display. Yep, we said it: VGA. Everyone waiting for the promise of compromise-free mobile web browsing and remote desktop connections can come out of hiding, because this bad boy could very well be the phone you've been waiting for. The TV-out and DVR functionality don't hurt, either. Now if you'll excuse us, we need to book our flights to Taiwan.

Samsung shows off 1.98-inch VGA display

Seems like every time we turn around somebody is doing an LCD smaller or bigger or thinner or bendier. In this case we have Samsung doing an LCD just plain awesomer, managing to squeeze a 640 x 480 resolution into a mere 1.98-inch panel. Samsung is saying the display is the first of its kind, and is targeting it for use in cellphones. Beyond the resolution, the display is rated at a plentifully bright 250 nits, decent 300:1 contrast ratio, and lovable 16 million colors. No word on when we'll see this in phones, but we'll sure be there with a drool bucket when one drops

UTStarcom announces CDM7075 flip phone

Nothing too exciting here, but UTStarcom just unveiled their new CDM7075 clamshell with a VGA camera. That's about all that's going on. There's a 1.8-inch 128 x 160 65k screen, a speakerphone (yay!), and a small black and white external display. The flip phone is reasonably thin at 0.9-inches thick, and the included 32MB of RAM is helpful, though the 3.5 hours of talk time seems a little weak. We're guessing based on this stellar feature set that this dual-band CDMA handset is due for a US carrier. No word on price or when we'll be seeing it on shelves.
