Samsung's 8.9mm C170 to get slim pricing

With Samsung having announced a slew of "Ultra Edition" handsets at 3GSM a few months ago, is the company throwing a bone to the entry-level handset market with that awesome thinness? You bet -- and it's going to come packaged as the C170. Weighing in at 72 grams and with a nice 8.9mm figure, the C170 is not as thin as some newer Samsung handsets that are in the 5.9mm to 6.99mm range, but those extra 2 millimeters will save you some serious dough. Rumored to cost around $100 without subsidies (we're thinking free after subsidies), the C170 is "just a phone" but features a decent feature set for an entry-level model. Onboard is Class 8 GPRS (no EDGE here), a 128 x 128, 65,000 color display, WAP 1.2.1, and FM radio, 550-space phonebook and a paltry but livable 600KB of onboard memory. You really didn't think the C170 would come with over a meg o'memory inside, right?

Pantech intros slimmer slider for SKY

Pantech will be launching a new 9.9 mm-thick new handset into the South Korean market via SKY which stands to be the country's slimmest cellphone ever. The Pantech handset (no model name announced) will best the current titleholder, a Samsung Ultra Edition, which clocks in at 12.9mm. But, with a slew of even thinner Samsung Ultra Edition handsets on the way, the "thinnest phone" crown is sure to be thrown up in the air for grabs a few more times this year. Pantech's new skinny slider comes with a digicam (no specified rez) and an MP3 player (of course), with a launch price of about $527. But the best feature according to Pantech -- or the coolest, at least -- is the magnetically-actuated slider, where most phones use a spring mechanism. Hey Pantech, since you're getting all cozy with AT&T these days, why not throw somethin' like this our way?

Samsung's F510 twists up screen for that DVB-H

Have a need for some Samsung DVB-H lovin'? Samsung -- like some others -- is going hog wild this first day of the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain by introducing things like mobile WiMax and a slew of thinner-than-thin handsets. Coming in sliders, clamshells and barphone (oh my), Sammy's new F510, a clone of the F500 (pictured above) with one important difference -- the F510 gets the DVB-H game on with that global mobile video standard even in the face of at&t signing on with the, well, a competitor to DVB-H crowd today. The killer concept on the F510, though, is the rotating screen that can twist to get you in the mood for that landscape-position TV viewing if you've got DVB-H transmissions floating in your airspace. Take a pic of your smiling self with the now-standard 2 Megapixel cam onboard as well.
