Funny story -- these guys will be one in the same here in just a few months, but until then, you'll have to pretend there's absolutely no relationship between Palm's 700p (Verizon) and 700wx (Alltel). Jibber-jabber aside, those still rockin' either Treo may be interested in sucking down what's apt to be the final ROM update for both handsets on these carriers. As predicted, Palm didn't go into great detail about what all the respective Radio Patches were, um, patching up, but you know you can't walk around without the latest and greatest on your phone. Folks never satisfied with ROMs as they are (we see those hands) can celebrate jovially, as version 1.93 for HTC's Touch Diamond has officially emerged. Said ROM was already available on the intarwebz, but this time it's ready for downloading at the handset maker's actual website for UK / Europe-based users. Reported improvements include "camera navigation, text alert speed, tab-switching speed and a new city selector in the weather tab to make it easier and quicker to choose your location." Give it a go and let us know how it turns out, would you?

Not a huge fan of cooked WinMo ROMs, but desperately want in on that 850MHz action for your Touch Diamond? Well, first of all, anyone who isn't a fan of cooked ROMs is just a little loony as far as we're concerned (but we still love you); secondly, HTC's made it possible to have your cake and eat it too with a new firmware update posted to its Asian site that proclaims the addition of GSM 850 support among several other changes and fixes -- some ten in total. After working through some confusion over the appearance (or lack thereof) of 850 in the band selection screen after updating, it looks like this does actually work for a variety of Touch Diamonds floating around out there, so let us know how you fare if you decide to give it a shot.

Sluggish Touch Diamond performance got you down? We can think of at least a few Americans that wish they had to worry about it, but HTC's infinite wisdom in leaving out GSM 850 and HSDPA 850 / 1900 leaves that crowd with bigger problems on its hands. The rest of you, though, might want to have a look at one of the latest fruits to fall out of the xda-developer tree -- the "Elite 1.0" ROM image for the Touch Diamond, featuring a handful of tweaks to streamline things (Welcome Center gets the boot, for instance), enabled HSUPA, and a newer version of the .NET Compact Framework that allegedly all but solves the crappy performance some owners and reviewers have been complaining about. This is about as unofficial as it gets, of course, so proceed with your own risk.

Separately, it seems that Touch Diamonds now hitting shops should be loaded with a slightly newer official ROM than the build passed around on the first batch of review units, and Coolsmartphone reports that it's faster. Not quite as streamlined as the Elite ROM seems to be, but hey, if you prefer to roll on the straight and narrow, it sounds like HTC has you covered.

HTC's Star Trek can now be safely categorized in the "classic" file, but it'd be a big mistake to put this interesting footnote in HTC's history out to pasture just yet. The handset, after all, ranks among the smallest Windows Mobile phones ever made, among the only clamshells, and arguably, among the most attractive (alright, maybe that's a bit of a stretch). But with that stale Windows Mobile 5 build on there hastening its death, what's an owner to do? Turn to the wizards at xda-developers, of course, who've come out swinging with a number of different Windows Mobile 6-based ROMs for a variety of Star Trek flavors, including the Cingular 3125 likely owned by many American customers, and it's all available for download. Always fun to see new life breathed into perfectly decent hardware, ain't it?

For smartphone owners, firmware updates are like little Festivus presents: they're usually free to you, they're given to you by someone you love, and make your life just a little warmer and fuzzier. Alright, all three of those points are stretches, but come on, it's still just a little exciting, isn't it? AT&T's mighty Tilt has just been gifted with a new ROM that provides -- and we quote -- enhanced Bluetooth performance, DTMF tones on the QWERTY keyboard, improvements in overall performance and stability, and a newer Windows Mobile 6 AKU, this one versioned 0.4.4. It's that most exciting time of the year for owners of Palm's Treo 755p on Sprint -- firmware update time! Unfortunately, Palm's being extraordinarily vague about the goodies contained deep within this particular binary; they simply call it a "tune-up" that improves "audio, stability, software quality and device usability." Sounds good to us. Palm warns users to set aside a mind-boggling 45 minutes of their lives that they'll never get back for the pleasure of updating, so be warned, and make sure you have a block of time where you really don't care if anyone is trying to call you.

The clever souls at PhoneNews seem to have cobbled together info from dcd's posts at XDA-Developers and other places on how to get gpsOne -- this technology uses both satellite and your provider's network to determine location -- up and running on CDMA HTC Titan sets. Once your handset -- including PPC-6800, XV6800, Mogul, P4000, and likely others -- is tweaked, applications like TomTom, Google Maps, and other GPS tools will be available for your navigational enjoyment. This hack will require that you unlock your handset, update the device's software, and then update the baseband radio firmware to get at the goods. Instructions and all the files you'll need -- software updates are listed for Alltel, Sprint, Verizon, Bell, and Telus -- are available by hitting the read link. Of course, this'll likely blow your warranty away, so fiddlers beware and if you're even a little concerned, it may be patience will pay off as a provider update could bring this in the future.

Sprint Mogul owners dreaming of a day when they can pop open Google Maps on their handset and get a GPS lock could end up having a very satisfying weekend here. Some sort of pre-release ROM upgrade (that is to say, not cooked -- a beta build of an official upgrade) has leaked out into the public domain, and the big draw here appears to be GPS support. Rev. A -- a feature promised by Sprint to be enabled at some point in the future when the Mogul was first released -- is also apparently going to be prominently featured when this update officially hits, but it's either flaky or switched off altogether in this particular build while the devs are still hammering out some last-minute issues. If all goes well, it seems Sprint's trying to get this thing pushed out in March, but the impatient among you can have a crack at the prerelease cut now. Enjoy, be careful, and good luck!

As promised back in April of this year -- well, the ROM upgrade was promised the date was the fuzzy bit -- the S620 is finally ready for its big day via a Windows Mobile 6 update. All you need to do to let your device soak up the glory is to hit up the HTC site, sign up for the free HTC e-Club membership -- if you haven't already -- and follow the instructions for your device. Good luck with this and remember, when flashing your handset everything will be wiped, so back it up before you get started.

The wait is over patient Telus P4000 users, the Windows Mobile 6 update is here. After seeing the recent flow of HTC updates, it is grand to see a provider on top of its game and delivering the goods in a timely manner. The update process is well documented and even includes the steps and numbers needed to reprogram your phone's settings via Over-The-Air Service Provisioning (OTASP) once the update is in. Of course, if you've never flashed your handset before, know that all contents of your handset are wiped during the process, so back up any important stuff before you get started. Finally the Treo 750 gets its moment in the unofficial spotlight, viva la Windows Mobile 6 updates! Though, AT&T hasn't released it officially -- like the 8525 and the BlackJack -- if you like living life on the edge, all you need to do is head to xda-developers and scare up the ROM for a little do-it-yourself flashing action. As with other updates not yet officially sanctioned by AT&T, if something goes awry, you'll be out of luck for support. By our reckoning, the "Treo" of AT&T devices that were set to get updates now have dodgy versions floating around. So come now AT&T, where's the official love?
