Motorola MOTORAZR VE20 hands-on

We're going to confess a dirty little secret here: when we first started playing with the VE20, we didn't realize it was being branded and marketed as a RAZR. As we used it, though, it quickly became evident -- no one had to tell us this was a kindred spirit of the V3. For better or worse, the shape of the phone -- everything from the tapered upper edge of the display to the "chin" beneath the keypad -- looks and feels like an obvious evolution. You might call it a stepping stone in between the V3 and the V9, and considering that the V3 gets closer to its last breath on store shelves with each passing day (or so we hope), Moto and Sprint need something to slot in there beneath the mighty RAZR 2.

Call us insane, but for what the VE20 is, we liked it. It doesn't pretend to be a do-all, end-all superphone, nor does it try to wow you with its premium materials; it's just a decent midrange flip with what seems to be excellent build quality. The screen is exceptionally bright, clear, and rich, and the V9-aping secondary touchscreen is a nice touch (pun intended, of course). One area of concern: it froze up on us once, necessitating a restart, and the music app was completely broken in our tester. Our guess is that this'll be resolved in retail units or via a quick firmware update shortly after launch -- at least, it frigging better be.

The VE20 is available today for $99.99 on contract after rebates.

Pearl 8100, original RAZR on their way out of AT&T stores?

Grab your Kleenex, folks, because we've heard today that a couple of seemingly timeless pillars in AT&T's lineup might be breathing their last few breaths of in-store air. First up, the Pearl 8100 is due for replacement on all the networks that still offer it, with the 8110 and 8120 models taking their place depending on individual carriers' dispositions toward WiFi, and we're hearing that AT&T will be phasing out the older units this month in preparation for an April launch of the GPS-equipped 8110.

Next -- and here's a shocker -- rumor has it that AT&T is also starting to close the door on the original Motorola RAZR V3. Not to worry; naturally, you'll still be able to get those great circa-2004 looks by picking up a V3xx, but the old-skool units appear to be on the verge of overstaying their welcome. Frankly, the writing's been on the wall there for a year, if not longer, so we're not sure that this is much more than a formality. We'll keep you updated on this one as soon as we here more.

AT&T's Motorola Z9, updated V9 due in January?

Alright, Motorola faithful, listen up: AT&T's got a few goodies in store for you. Nothing we didn't already know about, really, but in light of the recent upheaval, it's a little reassuring to hear that stuff is still on track. It turns out that the Z9 -- a phone we heard about merely once before returning to the ether to mature for many, many more months -- is apparently on track for a January release alongside the updated V9 that will bring GPS and Video Share to the RAZR 2 formula. Oh, and that V365 replacement we'd mentioned a while back? Yep, it's still cookin' (with the code name "Hurricane," we hear) and may be billed as a higher end handset with crazy signal strength and some sort of industrial-grade metal housing. Anyone getting excited about that one?

Motorola's RAZR 2 V8 spotted on sale in Hong Kong

Yeah, it's already on sale in South Korea, we know -- but still, there's something that warms our hearts about seeing an in-the-wild shot of a hot new phone with a sticker price proudly displayed right below it. This example comes from Hong Kong, where the V8 (GSM plus EDGE only, no 3G) rendition of the Motorola RAZR 2 is available for $3,380 HKD (about $432). The travel distance-to-price ratio is too high on this one to justify us flying out to grab it, but with any luck, maybe AT&T can come through for us before too long.

Feeling cheritable? So are we, so this should work out swimmingly. Motorola's red MOTORAZR V3m was created in collaboration with (PRODUCT) RED to help fight AIDS in Africa -- and, coincidentally, to help fight boring-looking cellphones with a bright red shell that you're not likely to miss. It's offered on Sprint and features a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, EV-DO data, and microSD expansion.

A few rules (yeah, there are always rules):

You may only enter this specific contest once. If you enter this contest more than once you'll be automatically disqualified and barred from all future giveaways. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) In other words, be careful when commenting and don't submit more than once, ok?

Motorola rolls out RAZR V3i in purple

Let's see, do we have enough RAZR colors to make a full spectrum now? Red, check. Orange? Yep, there was a "pumpkin orange" V3x back in the day. Yellow, eh, we suppose the D&G model counts for that. Green, you betcha. Blue, yep. Indigo / violet, well -- now's your time to shine. Apparently put together as a Mother's Day special (though available through the end of July), the V3i is now available in a deep, stand-out shade of purple direct and unlocked from Moto. Specs are the same ol' V3i ones -- quadband GSM with GPRS data, 1.3 megapixel cam -- all for a shade under $240. Any moms out there want to chime in on the goodness of this thing as a gift?

MOTORAZR maxx Ve up on Verizon

We knew that today was the day, now sho'nuff Motorola's MOTORAZR maxx Ve is up and jumpin' on Verizon. A two year contract nabs $199.99 (after $50 on-line discount) worth of touch-sensitive controls, 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and the option to lap up all the V CAST music and video you can stuff into microSD expansion. Now giddy up childrens, your EV-DO ride awaits.

AT&T gets Motorola V3xx in platinum

The color, that is; not the metal. AT&T has officially released the 3G RAZR variant in "platinum," which we think is code for "silver." Specs are pretty much the same as the charcoal and gold versions before it, though this will be the first color to sport full AT&T branding inside and out -- they've even switched out the keypad to replace the etched Jack with an etched globe. Having the latest and greatest hue costs cold, hard cash though, with the platinum running a full $50 more after rebates and activation than the original and $20 more than the slightly newer gold. Get it now in store or direct from AT&T's site.

NTT DoCoMo hops on D&G RAZR bandwagon

The partnership betwixt Motorola and Dolce & Gabbana must be proving fruitful, because NTT DoCoMo customers are the latest to get hooked up. The D&G-branded version of the M702iS rehashes the same bleeping RAZR formula, but changes out some of the less flashy bits for... well, flashy ones: the gray shell is replaced with a gold one, the phone comes loaded with a variety of original wallpapers and ringtones, and naturally, you get the obligatory D&G pendant, all in lovely custom packaging. Pre-orders for the model began March 1, but it'll only start to make its way into users' hands on April 20 for the princely sum of ¥75,000 (about $640). Don't hem and haw about it too long, though -- sales end on May 31 at precisely 10:30pm or until all units or sold, whichever comes first.

Hot flips: launch details for Verizon's VX8700, MOTORAZR maxx Ve

Verizon's finally fessed up to a couple hotly-anticipated handsets that've been kicking around in rumorland for some months now: the MOTORAZR maxx Ve from Motorola and LG's VX8700. The maxx Ve is the CDMA rendition of the V6 maxx for GSM networks, offering a 2 megapixel cam, touch sensitive controls, and a thin, sleek package -- in other words, nothing has changed since yesterday spec-wise -- and will drain your wallet, purse, or other currency-toting device of $200 after rebates on a two-year agreement when it hits on April 24. Announced alongside the maxx Ve, the VX8700 takes LG's Shine formula and brings it to the US for the first time, although Verizon has opted not to tag the phone with Shine branding for some reason. Like the maxx Ve, you get a 2 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, but this one's for the high-style types with a champagne-hued brushed metal case. It'll beat the Moto to market, rolling out on April 6 for $180 after rebates with the requisite contract.

AT&T unleashes Motorola V3xx Gold

If there's one thing AT&T's 3G offerings have lacked thus far, it's been a gaudy overabundance of yellow metal. Well, problem solved. The midrange V3xx has been re-rendered in a lovely gold shade, decidedly more flashy than the original gunmetal gray variant. Features carry over, meaning we get the same 1.3 megapixel shooter, microSD expansion, fabulous HSDPA radio, and just-can't-get-enough RAZR styling for the price of $99.99 after contract and rebates have been applied. Look for it in stores now -- or, if you're like us, you'll keep those wallets firmly shut for the maxx.

Motorola teases with RAZR maxx Ve site

Nope, it still ain't available, but Moto's slowly letting down its defenses in the battle to find out everything there is to know about the new king of the CDMA RAZR hill. The MOTORAZR maxx Ve (the capitalization rules here are driving us nuts) will be coming to Verizon at some point in the future -- the near future, we hope -- and a new microsite thrown up by Motorola itself proves it even more conclusively than the press shots mysteriously shown several months back. With a 2 megapixel autofocus cam, EV-DO, and that oh-so-fresh RAZR styling, you've got a surefire winner on your hands, Verizon.

It's been ages since we first saw a CDMA-compatible Motorola RAZR maxx for Verizon -- thanks to none other than Moto itself publishing pictures on one of its sites -- and Chicago's home team is throwing confidentiality to the wind once again by throwing up the still-unreleased maxx Ve's user guide. No surprises, really -- VCAST music and videos, Bluetooth with A2DP (and dial-up networking!) -- but this'll be some hot reading material to hold folks over for a few more minutes while we patiently wait for a release (or, heck, even an official announcement would be nice). AT&T launches MOTORAZR V3xx HSDPA clam

We just peeped it with the FCC and on the pricing sheet. Now, just like we expected, out pops the Motorola V3xx on the new AT&T. Sure, it's no MAXX or SYNC but we're not going to complain about having another HSDPA option in the US market. Although, we'd have preferred free over the $80 it'll cost ya after a two-year contract and $50 mail in rebate. Still, not bad for stereo A2DP Bluetooth audio, MicroSD expansion for your media, and a clam that will double up as a high-speed wireless modem.

Behold, the Cingular-branded Motorola V3xx

Oooh, lookey! See that lil' orange splat on the left? With phones like the Samsung SYNC in Cingular's 3G arsenal, the V3xx won't be unique by the time it launches -- and it certainly won't be the first bearing HSDPA -- but hey, broadband data is still broadband data; we'll take what we can get and eat it up with grins on our faces. To be fair, with its meager 1.3 megapixel cam, the V3xx is a great choice for folks that want little more than a basic stylish (by 2004 standards) clamshell that can double as a rip-roarin' modem. Just keep it cheap, Cingular, and we can put our support behind this one. Follow the break to see 'er in the upright and locked position (hint: it looks pretty much like any other RAZR closed).
