i-mate's rumored "Hummer" -- for when you absolutely, positively don't care what it looks like

Say, for a moment, that Windows Mobile is Planet Earth; if the Touch Diamond lies somewhere around the North Pole, then we think you'd find this one freezing its ass off down in Antarctica. It's a stretch of an analogy, we know, but it's difficult to express just how different (and by "different" we mean "less attractive") i-mate's rumored "Hummer" is than some of its Windows Mobile 6.1 contemporaries. Granted, it does HSDPA, WiFi, and it's supposed to be ruggedized -- but we're not really convinced that exposed screws were the right way to get that point across. Then again, most of the devices rumored out of the house of i-mate from last year didn't make it to production, and this one may very well not either, so why sweat it?

Hands-on with Modelab's Hummer and Levi's handsets

We've seen both the Levi's and Hummer sets over the last few months, but haven't had opportunity to talk to the gents over at Modelabs or get a chance to see them in real life. While we weren't able to glean too much new info, we did hear that they do hope to see these things land over here but not with a carrier, these will simply be sold as unlocked handsets -- potentially through Hummer dealers and Levi's stores. Specs are sketch, but we do know neither sports 3G, WiFi or other high speed access technologies. Build quality is very nice on both handsets, but the Levi's set is actually pretty fantastic, we're not big on the Levi's branding, but the screen and device materials are jaw-droppingly fantastic. We only say the black iteration of the Levi's set, but the Hummer branded phone comes in yellow, and dark and light camo. Pics are just below.

The Hummer phone gets real

Looks like the French electronics company Modelabs will be reported making a handset specifically for Hummer. Nope, from all respects, this new won't be made by any "famous maker" with just Hummer stickers or something. No sir, this baby packs some respectable specs and the only knock we see if lack of 3G data. Full specs after the break. the market demographics for civilian Hummer vehicles are pretty macho and all that, so this handset, understandably, has that same feel from just looking at photos of it (yes, it's made of "premium materials"). We'll see if it has that "tank" feeling once we have one in out mitts -- hopefully soon. A summary of features includes: GSM / GPRS / EDGE (eww), 262K color touchscreen with virtual keyboard, microSD slot, MP3 player and FM radio and a weight of 100 grams.

HUMMER to launch mobile phones and accessories

If you're a luxury HUMMER driver, you'll be glad to know that while all that power is feeding your inner need, you can have a customized mobile environment to go along with that frost white H2. HUMMER and Modelabs Group out of Paris have agreed to to design, produce, market and distribute a line of mobile phones, accessories and on-device services. The cool branding thing is that all these devices and phones will exist under the HUMMER brand just to ensure you don't forget who's signing the R&D checks. HUMMER says that Modelabs -- a global expert in mobile device customization -- will ensure that these units and devices will be developed to be durable and high performance -- along with carrying HUMMER's rugged design. Distribution? We thought you'd like to know that. Try Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, North America -- including Canada and the U.S. -- and South America. Dates? second quarter of 2007.
