Buy a Mac, get Office at 30% off {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Sep 4th 2008 8:16PM Hmm... maybe a guarantee that my mac won't be outdated the day after I get my cheap copy of office when Steve takes to the stage on the 9th September?

Aug 19th 2008 9:54PM It would look nicer if the screen were enlarged out to the larger line etched around the inside of the bezel. As it is, that kind of looks as though it's there so a larger screen could be fitted to the same chassis in future - just need to move the webcam up above it and get those pesky speakers out of the way below the current screen.
iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak goes live, update: it works! {Engadget}
Jan 24th 2008 6:35PM Can any of the people who've tried this (including Engadget!) let us know the details of how their phones were unlocked and whether the unlock persisted?
I'm using a TurboSIM which is fairly resilient to upgrades, but I heard that 1.1.3 stopped it working - I'm not sure if my phone will remain unlocked if I perform this jailbreak?
1.1.3 iPhone jailbreak goes LIVE {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jan 24th 2008 6:22PM it will. I haven't tried it but I read the way it works. It flashes your phone with a modified 1.1.3 image. your settings and music will be intact, and installer.app is pre-installed onto the image so you'll still have that. But all your other apps will be gone
iPhone and iPod touch nab SNES emulation {Engadget}
Jan 22nd 2008 11:33PM Yes... interesting that the credits at the end list the music as "Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit". I remember that song sounding somewhat better!
And I love that they wrote "béta" tester, makes it sounds very exotic indeed.
Having said all that, I still want this app if it works well enough, there are plenty of games on the SNES you could play with iPhone controls - just avoid the high-action ones.

Intel releasing 15 Montevina CPUs in May? {Engadget}
Jan 15th 2008 8:15PM Macbook Pro revamp around May/June will probably include these with a bit of luck. Not much point in updating them now with a new multi-touch trackpad only to have to revamp them again in a few months once better processor technology comes out
Tips on replacing a MacBook Pro's hard drive {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jan 13th 2008 9:33PM Haha, yes I was thinking the same thing:
"Wow, you upgraded just in time to potentially realise that you voided the warranty on the MBP you now want to sell to buy a newly designed model released at the very MacWorld you're heading to!"
I have to say though, I'll take one of those new 320GB/500GB 2.5" laptop drives in my new slimline "macbook air" (or should I say "macbook vapour" at the moment) over a 32/64GB SSD anyday. Startup speed be damned, I always just put it to sleep with the odd restart for updates anyway and you can't beat having your whole music collection and still plenty of space to edit some video or watch movies on the move.
VoIP said to be working on iPod touch {Engadget}
Dec 10th 2007 6:03PM Reading the thread this post is based upon, it's been updated with a bit more info.
In fact the VOIP is only working as far as connecting to the SIP servers, and at this point no audio has been sent or received by the iPod Touch. Getting access to the microphone and speaker to connect up this final part will not be trivial either. Currently sounds as though they'll trial recording the voice and then transmitting it rather than doing the encoding in real-time (ie. probably laggy)
Still, it's a step in the right direction, more power to them!
Apple's iTunes unlocks iPhones in Germany {Engadget}
Nov 26th 2007 6:47AM So... someone needs to do a comparison of the files/firmware on an "apple unlocked" phone versus a legitimately unlocked phone and work out where the magic happens. Clearly there is a way for the new iTunes .dll to direcly access the phone to make this change, then we can all enjoy our "apple-endorsed" unlock solution which sounds very quick and painless.
I wonder if it sends the IMEI each time you connect the iPhone to iTunes in order to check whether it is authorised to be unlocked or not? That could make things more interesting...
