Lawsuit claims iPod + iTunes bond is monopolistic {Engadget}

Nov 7th 2007 3:31PM I enjoy the responses from people who don't understand antitrust law in the slightest.

The fact that iPod and iTunes have alternatives isn't relevant, stop bringing it up. Their market share is extremely large and prevents competition by tying to each other in a way that makes alternatives less desirable. That is all that matters as far as antitrust situations.

Competition is stifled because Apple won't license its iTunes DRM to 3rd parties to create digital music players that work with iTunes music store purchases.

Imagine the situation as Sony taking its music catalog, and locking down the CDs so that they could only be played on Sony CD players (assuming Sony had 90% of the desirable music in its catalog and 90% of the CD player market). That is why this suit should be successful. Apple is blatantly wielding monopoly power to prevent fair competition at the expense of consumers.
