NASA LCROSS moon impact in T-minus 15, water discovery expected in T-minus 19 (update: video!) {Engadget}

Oct 9th 2009 9:40AM Actually, they were planning on launching a lunar reconnaissance satellite to orbit the moon. They had a contest of sorts in NASA for the best idea on what could be sent to the moon with the satellite that was already going. The winning idea (this one) was to add some instrumentation to a ring that held the rocket to the satellite and then use the Centaur upper stage as the battering ram to smash into the moon and send the dust into the air. They didn't really have to send anything extra up there.

And even if they had discovered water weeks ago, they launched this mission in June. No reason not to finish it out.
