Apr 22nd 2008 2:29PM Well I think the NHL's problem is that EVEN most of its hardcore fans (like Simmons) have been staying away in droves. As this post points out, there's basically no such thing as a casual hockey fan--the only people who even have NHL on their radar are serious about it, and most of those people (like me) stopped following the sport amid the huge expansion and general crappiness of the product in the 90s. Simmons is right about the various things the league should do to become relevant again, but I am dubious that it would do anything more than get it back to the fourth most important sport in the US (Canada is another story, of course).
Is it even possible for the NHL to get casual fans? Probably yes, but outside of Original 6 cities I'm not sure how.
