Apple says turn-by-turn GPS coming to iPhone, copy / paste not a high priority {Engadget}

Jul 14th 2008 10:28PM There were 3 things keeping me from buying an iphone... one was addressed with the 3G (GPS), and the other two were MMS and copy/paste. I don't have 3G where I live. I find it ironic that the iPhone 3G addressed the hardware shortfall (GPS) but after so much time, and iphone 2.0 software, i still can't do copy paste or send an MMS! I don't get it. Apple isn't going to try to sell me another new one next summer just to add copy/paste or mms are they... I'd stay away out of pure spite at that point! Seriously! How can turn by turn driving, which is inherently dangerous in nature, be a higher priority than MMS or copy/paste?! I just don't understand. I'm so confused!!!

Unsubsidized iPhone 3G priced at €499/€569 in Europe {Engadget}

Jun 12th 2008 8:00AM (Newswire beeps...) This just in! Sales of iPhone 3G fall flat!

Ok so that might not really happen... but there is a pretty large issue that AT&T is overlooking... their target market.

The people that bought the first iPhone are going to be in large part the ones that will want the 3G version. Most of these customers are not going to be eligible for an equipment upgrade discount (that magical 199/299 figure) until 8 months after iphone 3G is released. AT&T's subsidized pricing (and most marketing in general) has always been,primarily, aimed at NEW customers. Most of the new customers they have to attract already bought the first one. That's their niche market. And this market just got the big 2 year contract shaft. The ball also got dropped here by Apple discontinuing the first model. I, as a current customer way outside of my subsidized upgrade window, would be much more drawn to the original iphone than the new one just because of the price. And, let's be completely honest here, the new 3G model doesn't offer THAT much more than the first iphone. Especially if you don't live in a metropolitan area that has a 3G network.

So will sales of iphone 3G do well, probably... you'd be hard pressed to find a much bigger bandwagon than the one apple drives... will it meet expectations... I don't think so... maybe after March 09 the sales will probably pick up... this is when customers that got the iphone at it's initial should be eligible for the discounted equipment upgrade (give or take).

oh and unsubsidized does not necessarily mean unlocked.

No worries: AT&T doesn't want your grubby, used iPhone when you upgrade {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 11th 2008 11:53PM Most?

No. Most won't fall into that category. You have to be on like the last 4 months of your contract to fall into it... I've still got another full year.

MY question is... if AT&T is going to up the price to it's current valued customers if they are... "non-qualified" Will apple have to do the same thing at their stores... after Jobs CLEARLY stated that 299 would be the MAX price.... HMMmmmmmmm

Apr 18th 2008 4:25PM Any word on WHS support?

It'd be awesome to be able to hook this thing up to that instead of a computer and use it. Then I could stream my recorded shows to my laptop anywhere with a remote connection... THAT would be awesome!

Apr 17th 2008 10:16PM ON DEMAND?!?!

NO WAY!!

I tried an HD VOD download ONCE, and I never will again... It took over a day on a dedicated cable modem, and it cost TWICE AS MUCH as my local dvd rental place! Sure you can "start viewing before it's downloaded," but that only works once it's somewhere around 90 or 95 percent! And what's with the whole 24 hour viewing window thing! Don't even TRY to tell me thats for my convenience to finish it later... as much as the frickin thing costs, I should be able to watch it until i actually finish it! In any case, I'm a netflix customer, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Get with it MS... Digital downloaded movies are NOT the future... not in any future... IMO, by the time broadband speeds get to the point that they can handle a 2 hour HD movie, at it's CURRENT size, in a reasonably decent amount of time (you know... putting the 'demand' back in VOD)... the sizes of the downloads will have increased (due to less compression, higher resolutions, interactive content, etc.). In which case it would STILL take forever to download! VOD... Video On DEMAND! When I 'demand' to see an HD movie, I don't want to wait a day to watch it... I want it NOW!

MS, I don't care if you put a BD player in any version of your console (though I think you'd be stupid not to eventually), but you must understand that VOD is not going to work, not for HD movies. It could work for a 30 minute TV show, but not a 2 hour movie. BD is the media today and probably the next decade at least, and it will be with or with out your support.

For the record, I love my 360, but the lack of BD support has (I won't say 'forced', but) given me a strong enough reason to buy a PS3. Is that really what you want... more PS3s in peoples homes?

Don't worry MS, your not the only one that doesn't get it... Apple is just as stuborn. It's great technology, but the infrastructure just isn't there to support it.

Ball's in your court MS... don't let me and your loyal fanbase down.
