Sprint's Airave signal booster in the wild, on sale nationwide this month? {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 2nd 2008 5:14PM So will a VPN and a decent connection overseas mean I can take my sprint cell and use it in a foreign country?

I wonder if hotels will start to offer "use your Sprint phone like it's local" service through these things in international locations. You can bet there'd be value in that. And at $100, it might even be worth it to go without a partnership.

How would you change Microsoft if you were Bill Gates? {Engadget}

Jun 27th 2008 8:53PM But he's doing that WITHOUT selling the company.

Also...the company isn't exactly his to sell.

Your idea is terrible. Stupidity mascaraing as altruism is still stupidity.

iPhone anti-interference shield puts an end to buzzing speakers {Engadget}

Jun 27th 2008 4:17AM @Eric I mentioned it was hers to maintain my distance from AT&T. I don't particularly care what carrier she uses (or you, for that matter), but as a consumer my only vote is with my dollar, and AT&T will never see another.

Nor Verizon, for that matter. Hang in there Sprint!

Ask Engadget: What's the best home media server? {Engadget}

Jun 27th 2008 3:56AM I second that. I'm running a QNAP TS-409. It has a stripped down Linux build on it, but it has more than enough to get the job done. Three USB ports (printer share, expansion), 4 SATA slots, and supports a wide range of RAID options.

It has a built in Twonky media server, so it'll play files on iTunes, Xbox360 (or any other Windows Media Extender), PS3, and serve files anywhere else. Even has a built in web server (with SQLite) and FTP server. Built in Torrent client with web access. Web configuration is relatively easy, especially for families. I've served HD content to both my XBox360s at once with no problem.

Backing up to it is easy enough. I think it comes with some backup software, but SyncBack (freeware) does just a fantastic job if you're not on Vista. You can even do it over FTP if you're away from home and know how to configure your router.

Jun 25th 2008 5:50PM No, it's like drinking JUST a Diet Coke. It has no fat, cholesterol, or any of the other things in that big list of McDonalds products you gave has.

Sugar Free Red Bull (8.3oz):

Diet Coke (12oz):

I don't get your argument. Are you saying people shouldn't even try to cut down on things where they can? All or nothing, huh? Good policy. You'll do well in life.

iPhone anti-interference shield puts an end to buzzing speakers {Engadget}

Jun 25th 2008 5:43PM All AT&T (and T-Mobile) cellphones in the US broadcast on a frequency that can cause interference with analog, non-shielded amplifiers. This has nothing to do with the iPhone (my girlfriend's Pantech Duo does it, too).

The can should work just fine, and result in only a very moderate decrease in signal, especially in urban and suburban settings where you've got multiple towers around you.

Or you could wrap your speaker's amp housing in similar material.

Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US {Engadget}

Jun 19th 2008 3:15PM The 50Mps is the line speed. It is NOT your internet speed.

Verizon FiOS deployments are designed for triple play - voice, internet, and video (high def). Verizon uses MPEG4 High Def feeds, so you gotta figure they're slicing off about 10Mpbs for a single HD feed. They take another 6 out for voice and you've got a 34Mbps connection AT BEST, if the equipment isn't throttling your connection because it's been stuffed into outside plant retrofits that can't cool it enough, if your ISP is giving you unrestricted access, and if your house's internal wiring isn't screwing it up.

AMD's Cinema 2.0 demo: "you won't just play movies, you'll play in them" {Engadget}

Jun 17th 2008 4:32AM I don't know. If you have an infinite number of systems and each is half as powerful as the one after it, 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16...1/n....

My god, it's EXACTLY as powerful as every gaming console to come before it!

But if that's the case, we have to sit here while assorted zealots (big-boy word for "fanboy", not just a Protoss unit) argue which of the current systems is the 1/2 and which is the 1/4. And I can't abide that.
