New images of Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 reveal minor updates, new color {Engadget Mobile}
Jun 3rd 2008 7:05AM CB17 - both your and Wired's argument seems to be predicated on this myth that WM is "hard" or unpleasant to use. It's not. It's a perfectly practical and useable interface for the wide range of technologies incorporated by the platform. When the Iphone is loaded up to the gills with all the gadgetry it's currently missing, I'll be interested to see how the UI really compares - until then it's simply style without substance.
The funny thing about the Iphone is how much good it's done us "WM idiots". The Apple hype has had the effect of doing more for WM's profile and market share than Microsoft ever have, as manufacturers looking to compete with the Iphone deploy WM handsets, like HTC's "Touch" range and SE's Xperia attempt above. The future for WM is probably far brighter now than it was a year ago, so thanks Apple, and best of luck for next time.

Jun 2nd 2008 7:02AM UM, CB17, you're arguing about the interface, not the OS. Whatever you claim about WM and the way the interface has developed (or not) over the years, you can't escape the fact the OS itself has remained bang up to date. At most stages of its development it's supported pretty much every mobile technology going at the time, including several that the Iphone didn't begin to approach last year and is only now about to address. You're boasting about new features such as the amazing ability to "add a bookmark icon to the homescreen", while WM has been supporting HSDPA since it was invented and Apple haven't gotten past EDGE yet.
I have a Tytn II, it sucks a little at video but it's still packed with useable, essential technologies that the Iphone can't touch. It came with WM6.0 installed, and has just had a free upgrade to 6.1, bringing with it a better browser, better overall performance, and threaded SMS (taking a tip from the Iphone there, although of course 3rd party threaded apps were available for WM since long before Apple released theirs). As a well established open platform, the functionality of my phone has long been extended well beyond anything that the Iphone is capable of, and the thing is, the interface is basically ok. It works. It doesn't look like a fancy-pants Iphone, but when I press buttons and doodle on the screen it does what I want it to do, reliably and quickly, and I'm still at a loss to see what exactly is wrong with that.

"Like a tailored pair of suit"
What? What's a pair of suit? Do they mean trousers? I think we should be told.

Apr 30th 2008 11:45AM Grngh. I guess there's a market for this stuff, but I don't understand it personally. If this sort of eye candy is important to you then please, just buy an iphone, it will satisfy you far more than this non-native fakery ever could. If on the other hand you're not an idiot, just get used to the WinMo interface, it's perfectly usable and easily customisable to however you like it, far more than the Iphone is. It also gives you proper access to the kind of features and functionality you'd expect in a modern high-end smartphone, including all that stuff that Apple left out of their prototype.
HTC reveals US marketing push {Engadget Mobile}
Apr 23rd 2008 4:26AM Old news? They're still selling a whole range of driverless phones right now. HTC = less bangs for your buck than you ever imagined.
They've badly tarnished their brand image everywhere that it had already been established, they thoroughly deserve all the "crying" here and elsewhere.

Apr 23rd 2008 4:18AM VGA displays eh? Will they have drivers? I'm just asking, because their current QVGA phones don't have video drivers, and I'm assuming VGA displays need drivers even more. So, HTC, any drivers with this hardware? Huh? Did you think of that this time? What else did you leave off instead?

Apr 9th 2008 6:32AM I sincerely hope someone goes down and "reserves their front row seat" with a bloody great big banner about the drivers issue. Someone needs to flashmob the place.

Poll: Did HTC mishandle the video driver controversy? {Engadget}
Jan 23rd 2008 10:40AM This is not about "high resolution video" and it's not specifically about the ATI Imageon, although HTC certainly did lead people to believe it would be included and enabled on phones like the Tytn II. No, what this is actually about is the normal, every day display speed of the phone, from playing standard video to opening the Start menu, using the camera, sliding the keyboard open to switch it all to landscape - it's ALL slow, and significantly sub-par. This is a 400mhz device that runs like a 200mhz device from a couple of years ago, or worse in some cases. Not good.

Sep 20th 2007 8:04AM I can understand US customer's dissapointment about EDGE etc, but the comments on the keyboard are well wide of the mark. License Suretype?? Forget that! Having used the M600 for the last year, I can tell you that SE's alternative is vastly superior. Yes it takes a day or two to get used to it (initially your brain assumes its a standard phone keypad, that's why letters appear to be "in the wrong place") but once in full flow you get the real benefit of a full qwerty keyboard in a very comfortable package. Much faster and more accurate than any predictive system (although it incorporates an optional level of prediction too).
