AT&T's 2008 plans include 80 new cities with 3G, HSUPA network {Engadget Mobile}

Feb 6th 2008 3:32PM I'm next door to you in DSM (des moines) for school and I WISH we had 3G here. We had it where I did my undergrad (Milwaukee) and back home in VA (Norfolk/Newport News) but nothing here in DSM.

Now if only my damned iPhone was capable of using said 3G........

The skinny on iPhone and iPod touch firmware 1.1.3 {Engadget}

Feb 6th 2008 3:22PM Yep. Bricked me too.

I have an virgin iPhone that was still on 1.0, I hadn't updated in the past for this very reason- others I know were bricked (with unmoded phones) when they did try to update. The update downloaded fine, installed fine, and when my phone went to restart- the restart failed. It left my phone stuck in 'please connect to iTunes' while iTunes would say it found a phone in restore mode (ironically it also said I had the latest version of the software, so the update took...it just had issues restarting the phone) but when I tried to restore, it failed.

Basically had to go to the genius bar and have them restore my phone for me, then come home and backup so I could get my contacts (it was saved in iTunes prior to the update apparently) and sync for my music and what not. The bad thing is that any phone calls and texts, etc done during the period of genius restore and syncing at home were lost on the phone- but at least my phone works again!

Zune people: we hear you, expect more coverage soon {Engadget}

Nov 16th 2007 6:25PM That is EXACTLY what I thought when I read yesterday and today's posts. I own an iPod, it's my second. I have Mac's and PC's in the house, and use both equally. When I saw that there was a review for the new Zune, I thought 'hey great'....until I read it.

Then I was scratching my head thinking 'okay, so WHY does he not like the Zune?' because at the end of the review I knew not a darn thing more about the new Zune than I knew when I started reading it. When your "reveiw" leads a reader to seek info on another site- you should face the fact that perhaps your "review" might not have been the best that it could be.

Zune people: we hear you, expect more coverage soon {Engadget}

Nov 16th 2007 6:14PM I know that something I was disappointed with in that article was that there was no true review of the features that the Zune actually had or where it lacked. Honestly, the article came off more as a comparative glance at how many mp3 players were on the market rather than just what the newer Zune could do. Also, for those of us who hadn't used the old Zune, what we did get in the article for the new Zune was useless. I have to say, it seemed almost like the article came off as a 'why bother' rather than a 'okay, here's the dish'. I love Engadget, but I honestly felt like iPhone and iPod and iPodTouch reviews got MUCH more in depth than this article for the Zune. It led me to go to CNet and other sites to get the review/info that I wanted.

Poll: did you upgrade your iPhone to firmware v1.1.1? {Engadget}

Oct 4th 2007 11:53PM I don't think I'll be updating the firmware just yet myself. I could care less about a wifi version of iTunes, as I never use it unless I'm managing my music collection for the phone or my ipod. Any downloading I do (and 99% of that has been free stuff anyway) I can wait until I get home to do. Too many people who have totally stock iPhones have said this update bricked them for me to even deal with the hassle.

cholo-
I bought my iphone on 9-17. It's a 4GB, so this might affect the answer a bit (assuming that price cuts and what not were really because the 4GB didn't sell and therefore this phone might be older stock than what I think), but according to my phone "version: 1.0 (1A543a)"

20GB PlayStation 3, RIP: 2006 - 2007 {Engadget}

Apr 11th 2007 10:17PM I think what everyone fails to realize here is what the few have been saying all along, yes when you add on ALL the features out there on a core 360- it *is* more expensive than a PS3. But here's the catch. Not ALL of us care for/want/need all those extra features.

Not everyone has a use Xbox Live for multi-player. I personally have used it in the past, but being in med school now, I hardly have time to play, let alone play on XL. But, what the Sony fanboys out there forget is that there is a LOT more that the Marketplace lets you do. Download content (which for the most part isn't all that expensive) new arcade games, movies, TV shows, etc. And access to that is free, unless you pay for content. Sure, Sony was going to give the access away for free, but do you honestly think you'd get the movies and content for free? Be real people. And can Sony really expect to beat what MS has had YEARS to perfect? Doubtless.

And then there's the wifi feature of the PS3. Who cares about wifi really? For most people, the lag is ridiculous for online multiplayer, and most hardcore multiplayer gamers plug into ethernet instead. Also, for those screaming about the MS $100 adapter- do an eBay search. That's NOT the only option to those who want wireless connection.

As for HD? Not all of us have HDTV's. My regular TV works fine enough. Card reader? WTF do we REALLY need that for? I mean, if you're desperate, use a $4 card reader adapter in the USB ports on the 360. Card reader's not a deal breaker either.

Bigger hard drive? Well, if you're not downloading movies (and to be honest, not all of the movies can be viewed indefinitely anyway- so not every movie would be on the drive forever) then 20 GB is adequate. I've downloaded tons of stuff and I don't think I've used 5GB yet, let alone 20. And though I don't know how many people use it or can use it, there is the Media Center expansion (and I think the Vista's will allow something similar to this) that would allow you to use your 360 over your home network. What's that mean? If you're running out of space on the 360, save the info somewhere else. Simple.

And let's not even waste breath on Blu-Ray. Until some of us know which way that's gonna go (esp those of us old enough to remember Beta/VHS), we aren't going to throw a ton of money on one or the other. My money is oh HD-DVD winning out, esp now with the failure of the PS3.

So, for the people Sony wanted to buy the PS3, the gamer; what mattered to some of us was NOT all the other useless features we had no interest in (wifi, card readers, etc) but what it could DO. So, I was interested, until I saw what a crappy game library exists for the system. I've played some of the games- and sure they look sweat, but none of them made me just have to have them or the system. Especially not for $500 or $600 bucks.

Yet, if you ask any 360 owner (even those who originally had no intent to own one) there is *at least* one game that the second they played- they HAD to have the 360. Sure, it has it's down points too, but when it comes down to it- the 360 fits my needs. It does what I need it to do- and like it or not, when you don't want or need those other options- it does it for cheaper WITH better games.
