Microsoft hoping gimped Windows 7 Starter on netbooks will drive upgrades, revenue {Engadget}
Mar 10th 2009 1:26PM Also, has anyone tried the Win 7 beta & installed the starter version?
I wonder if things running in the "system tray" count as one of the 3 open applications. Stuff that's always on in the background (like an anti-virus) or Steam (not that I expect to do much gaming on a netbook...maybe the original Half-life) or some of the special printer software that gets installed when you install a printer driver (I'm looking at you, HP) could quickly chew up any open software slots with a quickness.

Mar 10th 2009 1:21PM If upgrades from starter to a less-crippled version of windows were only $10-$20 dollars, then that might be an acceptable tradeoff.
If the upgrades cost more than that - ($75?) then that seems way too high considering the cost of netbook hardware to begin with.

Editorial: Ten reasons why Windows Mobile 6.5 misses the mark {Engadget}
Feb 18th 2009 1:09PM I gotta ask - what has Microsoft been doing the past 2 years? I find it hard to believe that Windows Mobile 6.1 took a lot of time to put together, and yet here we are with version 6.5 that features some cosmetic improvements but still has months to go prior to an official release.
People have been talking about Winmo 7 (Photon) since late 2005 - so (to me), it seems that Microsoft has had A LOT of time to get this project together - yet, it feels like they are scrambling to put the finishing touches on WinMo 6.5, which again, is seemingly little more than an updated skin & theme set.
I had been hoping that there would be some amazing new stuff shown at this year's MWC, but there's nothing really grabbing me.
It looks like the Palm Pre & WebOS is the thing to beat - I am really curious about how it performs in the real world, if people actually buy it, and devs start creating apps for it that people get interested in and are willing to buy.
