SageTV launches HD Theater (HD200) media streamer {Engadget HD}
Dec 1st 2008 7:06PM No need to hold out. The newest Popcorn Hour has all of the above with 1.3 pass-through etc.
Warner gets official with The Dark Knight BD-Live extras {Engadget HD}
Dec 1st 2008 6:54PM Agreed,
This BD-Live stuff has gimmick written all over it. Unless you are a 12 year old pimple faced kid that is. If you want interactive content just go to the web site.
Just give me the High Def movie!
I'm not interested in higher disc prices due to this cr*p.
Another research firm asserts that BDs will overtake DVDs in 2012 {Engadget HD}
Aug 21st 2008 5:27AM By 2012 a few things would have occurred.
Broadband bandwidth speed would have gone up considerably whilst cost per GB down considerably (i.e. realistic alternative to stream HD content at low cost).
The Media Centre PC concept would have also matured enough to offer a low cost, high storage (Tb's), high bandwidth alternative (that the average person could use), on demand etc. Think AppleTV 3.0, or even a matured MS product (PC Media Centre, or Xbox720), PS4. I just think it is a market there for the taking if executed well (i.e. ease of use of a HDTV set top box - not directed at the techie).
. . . or . . . . Beta could make a comeback . . .
No DirecTV HD for Vista Media Center until 2010? {Engadget HD}
Jul 6th 2008 8:35AM No Divx, no H264, no VC1, no Blu-Ray, no disc streaming etc etc. Isn't this supposed to be a total 'Media' product? (Even the 360 Dashboard can do most of these things - in 2007).
What was a great product a few years ago has quickly become irrelevent. These features needed to be added yesterday, not 2010! MS, whoever is in charge of your product strategy needs to be fired. And if you want mass adoption, don't make seperate fragmented Windows product releases without Media Center! duh . . .
Nokia's N78 and N96 get handled ahead of release {Engadget Mobile}
May 18th 2008 11:02PM I think the new releases are a little disappointing from Nokia. The N96 isn't really a big jump over the N95 (similar form factor, features and fucntionality). This when compared to the competition - LG, Samsung, HTC and of course Apple (i.e. slim form factor, advanced GUI's, touch screen etc etc.).
Don't get me wrong, I like Nokia . . . but they just seem to be lagging a bit of late
Video is more important than audio {Engadget HD}
Feb 11th 2008 3:07AM Totally agree,
The HD sound war (DVD-Audio v SACD) was actually won by MP3! Although both formats still exist, they are only really supported by Audiophiles. The average Schmoe just doesn't notice enough of an aural difference to not adopt the convenience of MP3. This is almost the aural equivalent to VHS being preferred over Blu-Ray/HD-DVD!
SACD has a sampling rate of 2.8Mhz v CD's 44Khz for example. Can people actually hear an over 50 fold difference in quality? Nope. Try the same visual equivalent – 2 times the resolution is easily noticeable!
It is the perceived VISUAL quality of the next gen HD formats that is the single catalyst for their adoption. Do you know of anyone watching their HD/Blu-Ray movies on a SD TV just so they can 'hear' the difference? Nope, but the reverse is probably the norm.
Not saying the next gen sound formats aren't great – because they are. It's just a lot tougher to hear the step in quality IMHO.
Blade Runner HD DVD box set gets reviewed {Engadget HD}
Dec 20th 2007 3:51AM Wow. A little naive.
It's not a waste of 20GB. This film uses the VC1 encode which is highly efficient (rated as 'stunning' in most reviews). Remember Blu-Ray only has the extra space to allow for its support of the 'old fashioned' outdated MPEG2 format.
Xbox 360 to get built-in HD DVD drive in late 2008? {Engadget}
Oct 19th 2007 6:22PM All of this is called PROGRESS. Live with it!
Youre mobile phone is outdated the day you buy it, that TV you just brought, Computer, PVR, iPod . . .
There will be a ps4, ps5, Xbox 720 . . .
This is the real world and it is big scary place.
It is called PROGRESS people. Stop the "I'm getting screwed" complaining, it is really pathetic.
Live with it or go and crawl under a rock and never make another purchase again!
By the way, I think this story is really nothing more than rumour anyway. :)
Xbox 360 to get a new HD DVD drive in 2008 {Engadget}
Sep 20th 2007 5:40PM God you guys are a bunch of wieners.
The current drive supports HDi, plays EVERY HD DVD title, is fast, output quality is EXCELLENT, it decodes EVERY video and sound format inc Dolby True HD and DTS HD, it's inexpensive . . . For what it is it is close to perfect.
What is it again all of you lot are complaining about . . ???? Oh yeah, thats it, any reason to complain.
"Early adopter" blah blah blah . . sheeesh.
Nokia refreshes Maps application {Engadget Mobile}
Sep 15th 2007 4:02AM Jody, sorry but you obviously don't even know what tracking is.
After setting up a route with a 'from' and 'to' location, the options previously existed "Start Navigation" or "Start Tracking" - tracking is no longer! This enabled similar functionality to the voice navigation, without the fee (a 'snail trail' of your set route was visible against the gps of your current position).
This was a great feature that shouldn't have been removed, and was really handy if you didn't want voice turn by turn navigation.
