But then I'm probably asking too much from someone who cannot tell the difference between a machine's speed being advertise vs. something like an opinion or service provided by human beings, which are variable for obvious reasons.

Nov 26th 2008 4:08PM Zak, I certainly hope you have some legitimate reason to be blindly defending Apple, because otherwise you clearly lack important CNS functions.
Good for the Brits; I wish America could do this as well, because in America, everyone who is misled by false advertisement loses except the few individuals (e.g. lawyers or people not too much smarter than Zak who sue companies for selling coffee that is too hot) who loot when they sue companies.
On a side note, this advertisement looks more blatantly false than the versions I've seen in the US.
I am really getting sick of Apple lately.
It's really too bad OSX is still a nice operating system because if it weren't, I would go back to PC.

Oct 14th 2008 2:55PM I see that CraigJ is at it again, it seems, propagating erroneous information in order to either pimp his own or company's stocks, or more likely, to worship his choice of religion.
I do sort of agree with his point about the price though– it's not that bad as long as it's S-IPS.
But glossy display is sub-optimal for most people who would be in the market for a serious display like this one and the lack of compatibility is disappointing.

Gloss is okay I suppose since this will always be used with same lighting and indoors.

I don't know about the Air, but on both the MacBook and the iMac, glossy (crap TN also) screens are the only options available and therefore the trend is clearly moving towards all glossy, all crap TN, all the time.

Oct 13th 2008 10:59PM I understand what you're saying, but aesthetics have always been important part of Apple's designs.
This, on the other hand, is a tawdry abomination and it makes my current MBP and even the ThinkPad tablet look handsome.
It looks more cheap than the worst of the Vista laptops from HP.

Unfortunately I also think that device will be at least a thousand dollars and probably much more geared towards business people; but I am hoping that business people's reading format isn't too different from that in academia.
By the way for Tim and any other in the academia, I highly recommend the program Papers if you are a Mac owner.
It's a life saver for amassing a large collection of PDF's with all the information such as authors, journal, # of times cited, etc.
It would go real nicely with an e-book reader like the one hopefully coming from Plastic Logic.

Oct 10th 2008 12:34AM First of all, ignore people saying laptop or iPhone.
These people are not academics.
I've used many tablet PC's and they are no good for this purpose, the reason being that they use the LCD technology, heat up, and have shorter battery life than I would like .
However, they can double as note-taking tools (but NOT as primary workhorse), which is extremely useful for a student.
Ultimately though, I think there is no product out there that is ideal.
I have taken a look at a few e-reader products, but most of them are not designed with reading research articles in mind.
Kindle is some sort of an awful Harry Potter fans' wet dream (small screen, ugly looks) and Sony is good for leisure reading only.
iLiad seems okay, except its screen is still too small for reading PDFs without zooming.
However, the wacom tablet technology is a proven technology so it may be the best option available for reading/note-taking.
Finally, the Plastic Logic's upcoming product seems like worth waiting for, mainly because it's big enough for letter-sized PDFs, and it's designed to be elegant and durable.
Unfortunately, for biologists like me, color tends to be important for a lot of journal articles so I think I have no choice but to print papers for now, but perhaps for your field, color is not important.
And people, please get off your high horses about reading a few cheap fiction novels. This doesn't make you an intellectual.
