Because coming from the UK, it strikes me as downright bizarre that so many people are making claims about degradation of suction when the WHOLE POINT of the Dyson is that it doesn't lose suction. Ever. Ok, well maybe it might lose it when the motor burns out, but I guarantee you that as long as there is no obvious blockage (which unless you're sucking up bricks there wont be) this thing will prove itself to be more than worth the money.

Oct 22nd 2009 7:46PM Not sure what argument you've been following Detox, but if their Devices & Services division, which makes up only 69% of their profit streams, itself only receives 25% of its profits from smartphone sales, a decline in smartphone market share of 10% year on year (which is a very generous estimate) then using totally iffy maths that really isn't logical and doesn't hold up at all, but is still better than yours, they've lost approximately 2% profits directly as a result of the decline of their smartphone share. Which really isn't much to write home about in the grand scheme of things.

Oct 22nd 2009 12:57PM Unfortunately it seems that under their new (2008) reporting structure, Nokia doesn't differentiate between different devices in its end-of-year reports. What I can tell you is that in 2008, only 4% of all Nokia Devices & Services sales were in North America, with 49% in the developing world. I sincerely doubt most Africans and Asians have much need for a smartphone.
Market numbers though look like this: there were approximately 1.2 billion mobile devices at the end of 2008, of which approximately 180 million were "converged devices" (read smartphones). Engadget Mobile reported that Nokia's overall market share in Q3 2008 was 39.4%. So at the time, it would be reasonable to say that Nokia's smartphone share was pretty much the same as it's overall mobile market share. So...given that about 15% of all phones sold were smartphones, this equates to the same sales share for Nokia's mobile division. It follows that given the higher comparative price of smartphones, their profits-per-unit would be slightly higher, so being wildly optimistic, we could bump that number up to a relative 25% of profits from smartphone sales.

Oct 22nd 2009 12:03PM Terrified? Where is your evidence of this? If they were that fussed they wouldn't still be releasing S60 devices. And I seriously doubt that smartphone sales even account for 25% of Nokia's phone division profits. Please try and remember that there are over 6 billion people that aren't Americans, don't have advanced cellular networks, or simply have no need/desire for a smartphone. Of the best selling phones of all time, approximately none of the top 10 are smartphones.

Oct 22nd 2009 11:55AM If Apple ever got majority share in the way you envisage it, they'd be forced to give it up pretty damn sharpish. Governments are very picky when it comes to potential abuses of monopoly power - hence the fragmentation of Microsoft. So be thankful they are still niche products that can afford to exist in a closed ecosystem.

Oct 22nd 2009 11:50AM I can't be bothered to find numbers because quite frankly I have better things to do, but I'll make some up that sound feasible and probably aren't far off the mark.
So you say Nokia's smartphone share has fallen from 45% to 35%, and that it's a serious problem when phones are your business. Firstly, phones aren't all Nokia's business. They are like the Samsung of Scandinavia - fingers in many pies, hence the massive loss reported that had nothing to do with phone sales. Second, of all Nokia phones sold, I'd estimate that about 10% are smartphones. Which means the decline in sales isn't anywhere near as bad as your numbers seem to show. Thirdly, Nokia almost certainly has a majority share in the dumbphone market, or at least very close to it. Apple, Palm, RIM, and HTC have a combined total of 0% market share there. And you know what? The vast, vast, VAST majority of phone sales are dumbphones. So perhaps Nokia is losing a little ground in the smartphone market, but I seriously doubt there are too many directors jumping out of windows or practicing their noose knots because of it.

Unless that screenshot is a terrible example of what you are trying to demonstrate, it appears you are definately complaining about not being able to vanish while standing in AoE and remain stealthed. Here's what I would do - run away from the AoE then vanish. I imagine that would work wonders...
