Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 delayed until next year? We think (hope) not {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 3rd 2008 4:33AM Unless it came directly from someone's mouth at MWC, I'm not sure where this "Late Q2, of 2008" release is coming from.
S.E's official line on this phone has always been that it would be released in the second half of 2008 (see here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/corporate/press/pressreleases/pressreleasedetails/globalx1-20080210 )
To me that means anytime from July through until December this year. They've left themselves a fairly big window there.
While it would be truly disappointing if the X1's release date was indeed delayed until Feb '09, it's hardly 3/4 of a year if their official release window ends in December, is it?
Let's just hope S.E. have got themselves together on this one and release it on time, rather than us having another P990 on our hands...

iPhone coming to Australia on Telstra? {Engadget Mobile}

Nov 1st 2007 8:52PM The only thing Telstra has going for it is that they have the greatest % of the population covered by their network, but no matter how much they play on that in their advertising, it doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of mobile users simply don't need that level of coverage because they rarely venture from major metro areas (which are sufficiently covered by the alternatives).
The funny thing is that they think their network is reason enough to charge like a wounded bull compared to everyone else in the market.
All I can say is if they do go with Telstra, and they offer the same purchase model as the US (buy phone w/ out needing to do a credit check & activate in store), then they are going to get a lot of people just buying it and unlocking it for use with another network - possibly even a higher % than with AT&T.

Porsche Design Mobile Group unveils P'9521 handset {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 5th 2007 9:18PM Played with a proto of this one yesterday at a retail expo in Oz. Is manufactured by Sagem on behalf of Porsche design.
The horizontal strip under the main display is a biometric fingerprint reader - this can apparently be used to protect certain apps (& the info held therein) from prying eyes eg. Messaging and Contacts. According to the guy in the Sagem booth, Sagem is the worldwide leader in biometrics.
Design is nice, if a little chunky by today's standards - all the silver bits are metal (aluminium maybe?). Flip can rotate 180 and fold flat against the device. Mechanics were a bit loose and unfinished, but that was because it was a prototype I guess.
Cam was 2MP I think, but wasn't paying too much attention.
Cheers
