Toshiba intros 12.1-inch Portege R500-S5007V with 128GB SSD {Engadget}

Jun 17th 2008 8:50AM OK, I have the 120 Gb (spinning) HD version of this. HDD failure after about 6 mos. Then a DVD drive failure. Technician reassembly wasn't as good as robot assembly - the base wobbles every time you put your right hand on the keyboard. Frustrating. Guess what - the 2nd HDD died after about two months. Maybe the SSD will fix the HDD problem. Me? After three Toshiba laptops, all with great service, I gave up on Toshiba. Lenovo X300!

How would you change Lenovo's X300? {Engadget}

Jun 6th 2008 8:42PM OK, perhaps someone who *owns* an x300 ought to provide information to support the opinion. The 64 Gb SSD is too small - I have no music, no photos/videos and have 15 Gb free. Pretty limited for day 1 of use - how will there be enough disk space in a year or three (I know, replace the SSD...but, still). I find that the optical drive isn't essential for what I do (while traveling - very useful to install software, though). There are many Lenovo/IBM details that are very useful (I had an IBM A series some years ago) - the wireless management, video-out management, etc is all 1st rate. The screen is fine and I appreciate the widescreen compared to a Toshiba R500 (I have one of these, too). I have the extended battery and get 5h+ with wifi on. Hard to beat, overall...

Toshiba adds 3G to the featherweight Portege R500 {Engadget}

Jan 21st 2008 4:15PM I've got an R500 with Vista Business. 99% of it is fine, fast enough, carry it back/forth work/home every day, travel out of the office 1/month and carry it from my office to meeting every day. No durability issues. Great battery life (5+ hours with WiFi on). Vista, however...ugh. Left alone on the AC for a couple of hours and the HDD refuses to spin back up, requiring a cold, power button off and the corresponding troubles when restarting - a few times/day. Since it requires 1-2 hrs of nonuse to trigger the behavior, debugging has been near impossible. I have the likely things addressed (never power down, never power the HDD down, but still...). And I called Toshiba for the XP downgrade and they refused, saying that my machine wasn't capable of running XP. Huh?
