WD gloats about second-generation Caviar Green Drive {Engadget}

Oct 4th 2008 4:56PM Does anyone have good/bad things to say re Caviar reliability? I had thought conventional wisdom was that WD drives generally fail prematurely, just wondering if the Caviar line was an exception to this...

Tesla CTO talks Bluestar, the affordable electric auto {Engadget}

Sep 25th 2008 2:39PM I think the Aptera will be worth watching; granted that in the near-term it's basically a 2-seater California commuter vehicle. If you're willing to live with that constraint, it's aero enough to keep the battery pack small (10kWh), while still keeping the range at 120 mi & the price under $30k. That small battery also means a quick, cheap ($1-2/night) recharge from standard 110V. The fact that it's classified as an enclosed 3-wheel motorcycle also means that under CA law, it can use the carpool lane w/ just one occupant w/o requiring an HOV sticker, yet not require a helmet or motorcycle license to operate.

My understanding of the Tesla Roadster is that it takes ~30 hours (!) to completely recharge its larger 53kWh battery pack from a 110V/15A circuit; the touted 8-hour recharge time requires a beefier 220V/40A circuit.

Apple introduces $79 in-ear headphones {Engadget}

Sep 9th 2008 2:11PM I think they mentioned these have a mic built-in too, right? Wonder if they're the triple-ring kind & would also work w/ iPhone? Would be nice to have an iPhone headset w/ inline volume control... (but for $79? Yeesh...)

Sep 9th 2008 9:45AM "weapon of paradise" - Thomas, are you coining a new phrase, or has this one been lurking somewhere that I've been missing? I thought paradises tended to be more on the weapon-free side??

Method devised for pwning first-gen iPhones running 2.0 via Windows {Engadget}

Jul 20th 2008 2:25PM Sorry to throw a bit of cold water on this, but unfortunately, all the cool 1.1.x apps that you can get from Installer won't run on 2.0 - d'oh!

Just FYI - after the 2.0 Pwnage is complete (def. not as easy yet as Ziphone/iNdependence), what you're left with is an icon for Cydia, which is the new replacement for Installer. It's still early days - most of what's available so far inside Cydia is unix tools & a few cosmetic skinning things. Nothing super-yummy yet like VideoRecorder, IntelliScreen, etc, etc. (but I'm sure that stuff will be coming, right? right??)

(No disrespect to the dev team meant, just wanted to set folks' expectations...)
