Having a simple box far from the TV to deliver content from (like to an AppleTV or similar set-top box) is OK, but as a primary way of watching content, a PC isn't sensible unless you are a college student who doesn't have a living room (IMO).

Jun 24th 2008 2:05PM Uh, the linked story has a TiVoHD on it. So this headline is misleading and/or inaccurate... TiVoHD is technically a "Series 3" DVR anyway, they have a very similar feature set (except for different harddrive, case-design, and remote).

May 30th 2008 3:49PM Well, it IS the Cable companies' fault. They hate installing CableCards, which are mandated by FCC. It's the only way ANY non-cable-company device can access encrypted digital channels [SD and HD both]. It's not worth hating on TiVo for this at all, it's not their fault.

Apr 12th 2008 3:23PM Spoken like a true hater. Your bias is pretty transparent, this kind of comment is completely.
Your fine to like the Dish DVRs, but to suggest that the competition has made no efforts to change and/or improve product is very short-sighted. TiVos today do a lot more than they did a few years ago. They still win the polls about who makes the best DVR (recent Engadget HD poll) by over 35% margin. And most people haven't tried all the products out there.
So please don't be trolling. I have nothing against Dish, but do some research.

Jan 12th 2008 3:21PM The deployment issue is part of why Comcast is starting out in NE only. There's a lot of active development going on to improve the quality of service. Ultimately TiVoHD/Series3 is still a better, more mature product (in no small part because TiVo got to design the hardware instead of using Moto STBs). However, having used both the original Comcast DVR software and the TiVo software, it's way better than the old one IMO.

Dec 19th 2007 11:03PM The firewire port is still operational (I can speak from experience). For what it's worth, because Comcast is required to have this enabled by the FCC, it doesn't matter whose DVR software runs on their box, it MUST support the Firewire port.
