iPhone 3GS takes plunge in pool while shooting video... and lives to tell the tale {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 27th 2009 6:28PM First...A REALLY FANTASTIC EDITING JOB
Second...The phone was probably heat sealed in a bag so it remained water proof
Third...Anyone at a pool with a phone deserves it to be dunked!

Palm's webOS over-the-air firmware update process explained {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 16th 2009 6:50PM Worried about the color more then functionality? I have a BlackBerry, nothing means more to me then functionality.

I still fail to see how people find this news....

For one, we all know that PALM and Sprint are pushing OTA updates. Why would you buy a phone (like an iPhone) that can be carrier, or manufacture supported for OTA updates that both manufacture and carrier dictate you will have on phone, if you are not willing to have said updates?

Second, if it means that much to you to have a phone that is easily hacked, and not killed by sneaky OTA updates, then get something like Android or BlackBerry (where YOU decide what you want to install).

Third, this IS a gadget site, so stick to the actual gadget, not some lame ass news story about "oh by the way, OTA updates are gonna piss people off". Umm.. NO. If I wanted a run down of how Palm and Sprint operate, Id read the flipping manual.

Obama makes a grave mistake {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 10th 2009 3:37PM 1. I can see the "mistake" of having a holster in the pic - it not only shows WHERE he keeps his phone for easy access, but it also can easily be identified to a trained eye what phone he has, and if its "hackable" and from the looks of it, that phone he has is NOT the one he should be using.

2. When the fuck did Engadget become the fashion police? And when the hell did they start talking crap about anything that protects a valued phone? ESPECIALLY putting down the presidents choice of holster... poor taste on Engadgets part.

3. He is the leader of the free-world, let him wear and do whatever the hell he likes, as long as a job he has at hand gets done.

Mossberg on new iPhone: it'll have "lots of added features," available within a month? {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 4th 2009 10:59AM I couldnt agree with you more Nerdherder...

Walt is a tool and a fricken idiot that thinks iPhone does it all, when it doesnt... Its taken 3 revisions to get it this far... Apple has too many excuses for not wanting to say "we couldnt do it" and "we wanted to push a phone out more"...

T-Mobile, Orange bring up the obvious concerns over LTE {Engadget Mobile}

May 20th 2009 3:36PM This is the reason Sprint was going EV-DV (which takes voice 100% over IP) till Verizon decided it only wanted EV-DO and Sprint needed that for roaming (as above stated EV-DV was Voice over Data and they couldnt survive on not roaming). They were attempting to experiment with VoiceOverIP but it never happened. Right now, they are managing to do it with WiMAX....

So my question is.... With LTE, why did it take till NOW, for anyone to think "hmm, how will we all agree on one standard for Voice roaming, or routing calls over data?"

I mean, what kinda freaking morons are running the LTE shows at companies, and instead of hating each other for being "the largest carrier in *insert country here*" why not actually work together and share the wealth of knowledge and re-establish themselves as something great. Capitalism sucks...

Anyway - I just really wanted to state that some companies are experimenting with it, but most have totally forgot what it takes to make a network still run. I mean, GSM is about on its last leg in most countries except North America, and CDMA is still going strong as well, but how much longer can both actually go..most importantly how much longer can the public go with having batteries that are constantly drained because a network operator insists on having CDMA/WiMAX/LTE, or GSM/LTE radios in their phones connected to both at the same time? We seen what happens with customers on the iPhone in America HATING the battery life and coverage, so lets be frank for a moment....

Verizon offers to cut exclusivity periods so rural carriers can get phones quicker {Engadget Mobile}

May 11th 2009 10:06AM Im going to agree with Chris on this... 6 months is not timely at all.

I would say that all exclusivity should be limited to 3 months on all carriers, and even more so - they should be expanded to cover the two different major network platforms in the USA, GSM and CDMA.

ie, iPhone has deal with AT&T for 3 years. THREE YEARS!!! ARE THEY INSANE? With the new rule I proposed it would mean that not only would AT&T, who is GSM, only get the iPhone exclusive for 3 months rather then "as long as I damn well please cause Im AT&T" but it would mean that it would have to be offered in the other platform of CDMA be on Verizon or Sprint at the same time as the AT&T deal.
ie Palm PRE on Sprint, I think the deal is 6 months. But the new rule would state that while the phone is on Sprint, who is CDMA... the phone needs to be offered on AT&T or T-Mobile who is GSM.

It creates competition by lowering the exclusivity time, and by pushing the two technologies forth GSM, and CDMA and gives consumers a slight edge in the better price of the phone, plans, and network. Clearly if something is launched on Verizon and AT&T and its popular, say iPhone.... MY GOD its a network free for all. If its on Sprint and T-Mobile however, it really comes down to price and urban area coverage.

MORE COMPETITION - SHORTEN EXCLUSIVE DEALS!!!

Verizon tidbits: Storm firmware saga continues, Niagara is the Tour, and more {Engadget Mobile}

Apr 28th 2009 1:12PM There should not have been a cap anyway on EVDO - the ratio of "average consumers" who do not use their phones for internet and those who do is so great, that those who do will see almost no slow down. I think the cap should have only been on data cards and it should have been 10GB.

Telecom New Zealand lighting up 3G network on May 13 {Engadget Mobile}

Apr 27th 2009 7:28PM Wait...

Lighting up a 3G network?

Am I missing something? The big 3 in the USA are already working on 4G, and one has a 4G network partially lit already. T-Mobile has a 3G network well in play as well...

So my question is.... Why the hell is New Zealand so far behind and JUST NOW lighting up a 3G network?

T-Mobile forgets the "un" in "unlimited," accidentally sticks texting record attempt with $26K bill {Engadget Mobile}

Apr 22nd 2009 3:27PM In the 5.5 years I was with T-Mobile (on the SAME 3-Day Weekend base plan) I never had a billing issue. I had add-ons that werent even offered anymore and were phased out (still never a billing issue). I used over 10,000 messages in the first month I had Unlimited SMS (upoc was big then), and still never had a billing issue.

When I canceled service, went back after 6 months to get FlexPay Monthly, THATS when the billing issues started. I was billed for Unlimited Text package, I had got rid of, for 9 months after I stopped service. I also still get a bill MONTHLY for -$5.62, yes NEGATIVE, as in a credit. I should call T-Mobile and have them send me a check for that.

While Im not going to bad mouth T-Mobile, I do think the billing issues are within FlexPay plans, and I wouldnt doubt that one of these two, if not both are on FlexPay - which is why there is issues here.
