Ask Engadget: Best backpack for traveling with gadgets? {Engadget}

Jun 20th 2008 1:01PM I have gone through a number of packs and bags trying to find the right combo of function and discretion. Right now I use a SoundKase bag, it was less than $20 at Geeks.com. There is an easilly accessible padded pocket inside that holds my external hard drive and keeps it from getting beat up. The clear pocket outside would be dumb to use an iPod in but I use it for my corporate ID. Makes it easy to check into security at work. But that's what works for me right now and probably not ideal for you.

In all reality, no matter what you do you are going to call some attention to yourself. Locals don't typically carry backpacks crammed full of gear and rarely have a camera in hand. The best bet is to just find a bag that you find attractive, will hold all the stuff you need on your trip and not kill your back too badly.
If you don't want to call attention to yourself then just leave all your gear at home or locked up at the hotel and just get a nice camera bag with room for a water bottle and some tourist guides or maps.
A decent rolling carry-on will do nicely to keep your goods safe en-route, just get an aisle seat to access it if you want to interchange goodies or access extra batteries. Just check the rest at the gate and see it when you get there.

I remember the first trip I took with electronics and my pack weighed over 60Lbs! I used only a few of the gadgets I brought. Now, when I travel I ask myself; When am I going to use this? Why do I want to bring it? What will happen if I leave it at home? Should I check it or will I use it en-route?
I Laugh now when I am skipping through the checkpoints with a lightweight backpack and sometimes an additional carryon while other folks are fumbling with a ton of gear they don't really need.

Plus, less gear means less weight, less strain on your back, less bulk, less noticable and more options for bags that will serve you well.

Those are my 2 cents anyway.

Redesign giveaway: HTC's new Shift UMPC {Engadget}

Apr 10th 2008 5:50PM Oh the glorious gadget that is the Shift! If I had one I'd totally make all the other geeks jealous. Of course I'd make Engadget the startpage and view it all day long! Well... I do that now but this would be on a trick little toy instead of my work computer!

Love the makeover but a scaleable font would be nice! Maybe change the color back to Magenta? ;)
