NBC kills useless, bit stealing, Weather Plus channel {Engadget HD}

Oct 8th 2008 10:23PM I bet they replace it not with the Weather Channel, but with a local news channel. There was a NY Times story about how the local affiliate WNBC is launching a 24 hour local news. It reportedly is an experiment that if popular will be launched elsewhere in the other big media markets where the affiliate can afford it.

Verizon pushes HD DVRs in new FiOS TV promotion {Engadget HD}

Aug 13th 2008 6:45PM Leonardo, do you have FiOS? If you did, then you'd know that there are price breaks for various packages. For example, I have two FiOS HD DVRs in my home because one is free for subscribing to the movie package, and another is discounted for subscribing to HBO.

Now there is no harm in loving your TiVo. Certainly the TiVo is a better product, but ask yourself, is it worth the premium? Your math suggests that the break even is anywhere from 4 to 8 years -- and in my case likely on the higher side because of the discounts. And when you consider the fact that the TiVo will break or become obsolete in 4 to 8 years, and Verizon will simply swap out their broken or outdated boxes in that time, your logic becomes flawed.

Like I said, if you love your TiVo, by all means its your right and you have good reason to love it. However, why are you trying to justify it by badmouthing Verizon's service? Are you just jealous that your cable company doesn't offer 100 HD channels yet?

Verizon gets official with 22 new FiOS TV HD channels {Engadget HD}

Jul 2nd 2008 1:06PM VZ isn't keeping the roll out a mystery. Sure, there isn't much documentation on the Web, but the info is available. For example, I learned that North Jersey will be receiving the new channels on July 30, according to a message on my STB.

REPORT: Tata and Mahindra interested in HUMMER {Autoblog}

Jun 6th 2008 3:40PM Rar, you are certainly right that the military's HummVee's are made by AM General, but Samurai Jack is on to something. As pointed out over at Dealscape, an M&A blog, the civilian Hummer brand provides an opportunity to share the cost of military vehicle production with a civilian variant. And both Tata and Mahindra are competing for an Indian military contract to make HummVee alternatives.

Nissan shuffles trim level designators {Autoblog}

May 30th 2008 2:54PM Um, SE wasn't the step up from the S when I leased a Murano in 2005. Back then the model designators were:
S -- a just introduced base trimline
SL -- the step up
SE -- Performance model
SE-R -- High performance model

Some models like the Altima had an "S with Value Package" option, but most S's carried few options.

Verizon preparing to enable internet scheduling for FiOS TV {Engadget HD}

May 30th 2008 2:45PM Wayne is right that these boxes may resemble each other, but have a few key differences -- hence the model numbers. The QIP models not only sport Qam over IP unlike the DCT models, but all seem to have HDMI instead of DVI and often have larger hard drives. However, the biggest difference is the operating system. The original QIP boxes had some horrible OS that made the Comcast OS seem refined.

However, Verizon has finally rolled out its updated MSTV-based IPG to all customers earlier this year. The new OS is certainly more modern than the Comcast one, but it has a serious flaw with its DVR scheduler. After the update, which happened during the writers strike, old series recording information appeared in the scheduler, but was ignored by the box. Consequently, users missed shows. Verizon didn't inform its customers that they needed to reprogram their DVRs. It was rather nettlesome. Even now, my boxes sometimes lose schedule info, but so far we haven't missed anything as it has restored the info just before air time.

Hopefully the inclusion of online scheduling means they have a bug-fix for the scheduler.

Save $10 on any 360 game at Target stores {Xbox 360 Fanboy}

May 14th 2008 3:46PM Damn, if I had this last week when they were clearancing DDR pads for $9.98, I could have basically snagged them for nothing, and resold on eBay for $25 for pure profit! Anyway, I saw the coupon earlier in the week on CheapAssGamer.com.
