"iPhone Dev Team" issues statement {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Sep 25th 2007 1:29PM I applaud the Dev Team for helping us really OWN our phones.
By unlocking my phone I am not stealing or harming anything except maybe AT&T's bottom line. And I'm not doing that in a spiteful way.
Like many, I am a loyal Apple user and ALSO a loyal, long-time T-Mobile customer. Steve probably thought we all wanted the phone so badly that we wouldn't think twice about switching carriers. (Oh, he knew we'd buy the phone, no question!) But did he think we wouldn't f**k with it to use it on other GSM networks? Did Apple really think that this AT&T BS would work? Wow. Steve. Wow.

iUnlock released: the first free, open source iPhone SIM unlock software {Engadget Mobile}

Sep 13th 2007 2:29PM Yes, you need to put the iPhone into recovery mode and then connect it to iTunes and it will let you update and restore. Look out though, the firmware file is 92 meg, so letting iTunes download the file for you sux it takes forever -- and while it was downloading, my phone would time out of recovery mode. Some mirrors have the file available for download and all you have to do is put it in you/library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates and then do the restore. iTunes will see that you have the file and won't try downloading it.
