DataWind's PocketSurfer 2 rumored to be coming to T-Mobile {Engadget}

Nov 9th 2007 1:24PM The datawind v1 was a one trick pony... internet browsing, which it does well by using an old (think 1980's) process of interpolating the web pages served up by a dedicated proxy server farm giving the perception of very fast rendering across very slow links. No local applications, no media or sound, no wi-fi, no 3G.

From what I've seen, v2 is a little fancier design but still a single function device.

Great idea and product that missed the market window of opportunity by about 6 years...

Cooked WinMo 6 ROM verified for PPC-6700, XV6700 {Engadget Mobile}

Aug 31st 2007 2:21PM The build was available exactly at 12:00 midnight US EDT (UTC-0400). Several people (myself included) downloaded the rar file and immediately applied with great success.

Helmi_c and the crew at PPCGeeks and xda have done a phenomenal job of improving the ability of HTC's trusty workhorse Apache platform and this is another huge step.

Two things:
1) if you are unsure of what you're doing, READ ALL YOU CAN about this on PPCGeeks and pdaPhoneHome; after reading if you're still confused DON'T APPLY THE ROM (there is always risk of bricking your phone)
2)Make a donation to Helmi_c -- the time and effort in bringing this functionality is significant and those who do this work deserve our support

Explay intros oio nanoprojector, plans to launch in 2008 {Engadget}

May 23rd 2007 7:20PM paloooz, based on your statement then each and every projector screen is not displaying any dark colors whatsoever, since they are almost universally of a light, reflective material. I agree that the displayed picture is most likely a photoshopped marketing dream, however what you're stating is not supported by the empirical experience of millions of movie goers... daily.

Verizon poised for SMS rate hike {Engadget Mobile}

Jan 7th 2007 12:34AM The big carriers are using the per-text rates to drive captives, er I mean hostages, er rather subscribers to buying bundled minutes that, statistically, most will never use the full allotment, thereby overpaying. I have been on the lowest possible Sprint voice minute plan, but unlimited data & SMS for the past two years. 24 x 7 push-pull email and averaging over 3000 text message a month; voice is so 2004. Virgin Mobile will continue capturing the SMS addicted market with 1-cent-per-text rates!

How-To: Revive your TiVo {Engadget}

Aug 15th 2006 6:54PM OK... I got my DirecTiVo Series 2 almost 3 years ago and hacked the unit within 2 hours of the installation tech leaving! I used the method similar to those described and it has worked flawlessly ever since with the 120 GB drive ==> 105+ hours.

Anyhow, here is my question: I am getting itchy to hack the box further (this comes and goes periodically based on how many other distractions I have - LOL). I have read many of the posts on tivo underground and dealdatabase, however I need on thing clarified.

IF I use the Zipper and other tools to available to implement some of the extra features alluded to above, do I lose the ability to connect to DirecTV and download my Tivo schedule? I have read thru much of the 230+ pages of posts and can't find a specific answer to this question. What makes me think I will lose this functionality is the repeated mention of running a cron job nightly to trick the unit into thinking it has already called or keeping the device disconnected from the phone line.

Please point me to the appropriate posts and save me from months of research!

TIA!!!

Dell laptop + ammo = no go {Engadget}

Aug 3rd 2006 6:46PM OK, I normally just lurk, however this is ridiculous. Look closely at the truck. The bed of the truck is damaged and extremely rusted. The cab and engine compartment are damaged, however not as extensively as the bed. does anyone have a picture of this "vintage" truck that is these two old men's pride and joy BEFORE the alleged fire? I have to say this looks to be insurance fraud. Why would you put your laptop and ammo in the bed of the truck? Beside each other? Exposed to the elements? Having grown up in rural areas, you keep your ammo in the CAB, just in case someone needs shootin'. And no way am I putting my laptop in the bed of any truck in 110 degree heat. Both of these variables would cause the CAB and FRONT of the vehicle to be damaged more than the bed. Not to mention that "a few boxes of ammo" in a fire make a BIG BOOM and would have ripped the hell out of that vehicle!

I submit that this wonderful "vintage" POS truck has been sitting in the backyard behind Jethro's double-wide for the past 15 years.

Flame me if you like, but this is a hoax, imo.

Palm Treo 700p looking legit {Engadget}

Feb 4th 2006 8:53PM As the owner and advocate of the 6700, the reflection is definitely that of a PPC 6700.
