Virgin Mobile to buy Helio for $39 million in equity {Engadget}
Jun 27th 2008 1:43PM Yeah, this blows. Well, I was gonna wait till this was all hashed out, but now this makes my iphone decision all the easier. I'm not staying on this sinking ship for another 10 months. Which is a shame, since I really kind of liked Helio.
Virgin Mobile to buy Helio for $39 million in equity {Engadget}

Q: Does this affect my current contract with HELIO in any way? When Virgin Mobile USA does acquire HELIO, can I end my current contract without paying an early termination fee (ETF)?
A: HELIO contracts remain in effect and unchanged by this transaction. HELIO members who wish to end their contract early will still be subject to an early termination fee (ETF).
Well, crap!
Helio's flame going out: stores to shutter, customers heading to Virgin? {Engadget}
Jun 20th 2008 12:42PM Well, this just made my iPhone-decision a lot easier. Will existing Helio users have to pay an early termination fee now? I'm assuming they'll try to screw us through the end. This is a shame, as I really liked their service. Not their customer service, but the phone and the plans. They didn't cripple the phones like VZ or put some terrible UI on it. And the unlimited plans were reasonably priced.
Well, crap.

May 30th 2008 12:58AM I was just going to suggest the Powershot G9 as well. It's a great in-between camera. A lot of SLR functions in it, but with a lot of the ease of a point ant shoot. You can use it figure out basic shooting techniques and basic camera terminology. It has a hotshoe for a flash, and if I'm not mistaken, I think you can even add lenses to it. I think. Anyway, just my two cents. I seriously considered the G9 but ultimately went for the XSi.

May 23rd 2008 7:54PM It's not the ideal shooting method, but I've found live view useful on some occasions, like when I'm trying to shoot something close to the ground on a horizontal plane, like a duck or something. It's just a useful method for framing a shot when you can't a good look through a viewfinder. Plus, with multiple AF choices in live view, you at least have a choice between speed and camera noise. Again, not ideal, but I wouldn't say its totally uselss.
Plus, it helps me take shots of strangers on the subway without making it obvious that I'm taking their picture. Ah, spring!

So the wii is only popular among kids, older adults, and "in-betweens"?
No wonder it's such a failure.
SK Telecom says talk of Virgin Mobile takeover of Helio is "groundless" {Engadget}
May 12th 2008 4:56PM I've been pretty satisfied with Helio, unless I have to deal with their customer service people, who are usually nice but utterly useless. But I really couldn't ask for more from my Ocean. Still, I don't know any other helio users, and I don't even know anyone who knows another helio user, which doesn't bode well for the company seeing as I live in NY. I think maybe twices I've even seen people on the street using helio. The new iPhone might make me jump ship - especially if the ship is sinking - but in general I'm totally satisfied with Helio. Love their services and my phone isn't full of bloatware like Vcast, etc.
