Microsoft's XP for low-cost PCs defines some boundaries {Engadget}
May 10th 2008 4:00PM if they really want to compete with Linux, they should give XP away for free.
they've already made tons of money off it, and they have other cash cows (vista, office, etc.) to keep the shareholders happy. they've already spent 99% of the money on it that they're going to spend over the support life of the OS, so instead of killing it (which they were going to do in June) and not make any money off it, why not give it away and not make any money off it? don't make it open source, but give it away for free. that way you get the consumers in developing nations hooked on windows, so that when they're looking to upgrade they'll be more likely to buy vista because they're comfortable with windows. call it an investment with no up-front costs.
just my opinion.

HP 2133 Mini-Note PC misses ship date for pre-orderers {Engadget}
Apr 15th 2008 3:45PM @Jon Lam -
that actually happened to me. a few years ago i ordered a dell laptop off eBay from an online-only retailer. when i received the box, i opened it to find an ancient compaq beige-box computer instead of the shiny laptop i expected. apparently one of the packing guys stole the laptop off the line and swapped in the tower case, figuring i wouldn't notice.

Apr 15th 2008 3:41PM i might buy one of these as a data logging station for the lab i work in... buy a few RS232-USB adapters and a USB hub, plug in equipment, start logging, and run VPN software so i can remote-desktop in over the wifi and monitor the equipment. point the webcam at the experiment and i even get a live video feed, too... all for around $600. sounds good to me.
