Mar 16th 2006 2:01PM I have no way of knowing if the OLPC will be a boon or not. However, there is already ample evidence that some forms of technology - specifically cell phones - are a large boon to developing nations. Small farming villages in sub-saharan Africa can now call the large markets and see what crops to bring. They don't have to waste all day bringing crops to the market in the next town no one will buy. I've read several case studies on this, but can't be bothered to look them up with a link now. Better communication and information helps more than just developed countries.
Perhaps the farmer could look up what the current market is for his product on an exchange and thereby charge an extra $0.05 a Kilo for it. Might make a difference. Just because you can't think of a use for these computers does not mean the people in these countries have a similar lack of imagination.
