A stroll through the MVNO graveyard {Engadget Mobile}

Aug 26th 2008 4:02PM MVNO's have thrived in the UK with every supermarket, Virgin, electricity and gas companies, etc. all having a service alongside those provided by the telephone dealers like BT, CarphoneWarehouse etc. There are 5 network providers here but many times that providers. Indeed there are options from some companies to make your own MVNO.

I don't understand why an MVNO business model should fail. All one needs to do is cover the costs of the line rental, advertising and normal business costs and taxes and all else is easy.

iPhone 3G announced {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 9th 2008 4:03PM Well Apple's site is still diverting people to O2 shops which is a shame. The exclusivity contract is very frustrating for those of us with better data and telephone deals with 3 or T-Mobile.

I was tempted but now had time to think it over. No front facing camera for video calls. Come on, 3 have had this for years and it's damn useful! No expansion slot for Micro-SD cards - now considered standard for phones. No removable battery so built in obsolesce from the start.

I still think Apple does not understand how the non US market see mobile phones. It's good and will take sells from Nokia and SE for sure, but it's still not the dream phone. Just a desirable one for some.

Qualcomm never says die, puts cash into British MediaFLO network {Engadget Mobile}

May 18th 2008 3:26AM The commission can't impose a standard, it can only recommend.

The decision must be approved first by the European Parliament and then by the Council of Ministers (which is where the real power lies) as that is the meeting of the equivalent ministers from all member states. Their meetings are behind closed doors and once they have agreed a majority then they recommend to the national parliaments.

The decision to use DVB-H was made, I understand, on purely practical considerations as DVB-T, DVB-S and DVB-C is adopted standard in the EU for digital broadcasts and would require few changes to broadcasting legislation in member states.

BlackBerry 9000 to come in cheaper, 3G-less version {Engadget}

May 5th 2008 9:20AM Given that most of Europe and Asia has been 3G for a while and rapidly moving to the next level, that can only mean this is being made for the older infrastructure in America which leads me to beleive that it would be better to consider moving to a network which offers 3G rather than sticking to one without in order to get them waking up and implementing the technology before they get left behind again.

Yahoo! releases statement: Glad that's over {Download Squad}

May 5th 2008 6:20AM It's very good news for the users and for competition. Reducing the options to just two, Google and Microsoft-Yahoo! would not have been good for anyone other than the shareholders. The only people whining now are those who stood to take M$'s money and run. Reducing to two may have passed the American lapse competition comission but there isn't any certainty it would have passed the stricter European competition authorities on that basis and both companies are registered in the EU.

Yahoo! have a good brand, have developed it from nothing to it's present position. Google may have eclipised it but it's still strong.

M$ need to work on their own services rather than trying to buy out the competition who do not want to be bought.

A deal with AOL may yet be a good option on services promotion but Yahoo!'s long term future as as Yahoo!
