OCZ intros 3.5-inch Colossus SSD at Computex {Engadget}

Jun 2nd 2009 12:57PM RAID 0 actually does nothing to secure your data, if one component of a RAID 0 fails, all your data is lost. RAID 0 is all about lowering latencies and increasing throughput. You also can't do a RAID 5 on this particular device since there's only two internal drive components, it would have to be a mirror (RAID 1) if you want to secure your data.

I think the more interesting part of this is that within a 3.5" drive you can have the ultra low latencies of a SSD paired with the previously mentioned RAID 0 benefits. It's really the best of both worlds, the performance on this thing should be impressive to say the least.

As soon as they can fit more drive components to increase the number of "drives" in the RAID array, the performance will approach ludicrous speed.

Bill Gates -- Recession-Proof {TMZ}

Oct 30th 2008 6:07PM Dear TMZ,

Please stop deleting Robert Haleluk's posts. I find his extraordinarily idiotic posts quite humorous. Thanks.

HP 2133 Mini-Note PC on sale now {Engadget}

Apr 9th 2008 10:50AM I gotta agree with Anonymoose, if you wanna play, ya gotta pay.

I think Priper's comment is pretty close to the truth. Think about the AMD Opteron when it first came out, HP was the first major player to introduce the AMD in it's DL585. I've been told by our HP reps that Intel gave them some serious grief over that one...

I doubt they will go to an Intel platform for this guy anytime soon (more development costs, more inventory for the same platform, blah, blah, blah). I'm guessing that HP was/is banking on VIA's new Isaiah chip that's getting released this year to give the 2133 a performance boost since it's supposed to be pin compatible to the C7. From what I've seen the Isaiah could be a very good mobile chip...but I'm not holding my breath...

Samsung's new TouchWiz UI gets previewed on video {Engadget}

Feb 15th 2008 5:47PM @Andrew

If you like this one, you may be in luck, check out the Samsung SPH-M800...hopefully it'll have the same UI and it is coming to Sprint sometime soon.

I just got the Touch (great device incidently, especially coming from a Palm), but I think I would have waited for the M800 had I seen this UI and known earlier when it was supposed to come out...

And yes, SERO friggin' rocks big time. I have no problems dropping a few hundred for a phone, but I absolutely refuse to pay excessively monthly for it...

HP's MediaSmart Home Servers get a release date {Engadget}

Aug 23rd 2007 1:36AM @Dias

"I heard that it doesn't use raid technology but something else, I wonder how it works."

It does not use RAID. Your next questions leads into how it works...

"Suppose that I have 2hd in my WHS: 100Gb and 300Gb; total capacity is 400GB?"

Correct, it virtually merges all drives that are added, kind of like spanning dynamic drives.

"And if 2nd hd (bigger one and full of data) breaks, what happens?"

You lose any UNPROTECTED data on that drive. You can set up protected folders on the system that will replicated the data in the folders to another drive in the quasi-array. This will take away from the total available space of each drive. Using your 100GB+300GB drive scenerio, let's say you have 50GB of PROTECTED data and 100GB of UNPROTECTED data. Then you could calculate your free space like this:

(100GB - 50GB) + (300GB - 50GB) - 100GB = 200GB

Hope that makes sense...
