How would you change Microsoft's new Zunes / v3.0 software? {Engadget}
Nov 1st 2008 12:04AM 1. Bigger screen (or smaller player with less bezel) on the flash Zune
2. Properly handle multiple-disc albums on the hardware (currently you get all the track 1's, then all the track 2's, etc.). This works fine on the PC, so why does it mess up on the player?
3. Better Xbox integration
4. More video codecs!
5. Improved shape on pack-in earbuds. Not really a priority since any given earbud shape will only be comfortable to about 3 people.
I used iTunes for several years, and I previously owned a 2nd gen iPod nano, and I can say that there are pros and cons to either platform. The Zune software (at least since 2.0) runs much faster and uses less memory than the PC version of iTunes, and I personally enjoy the interface, including the love/hate rating system. The auto-conversion of star rankings is a little off (everything from 3 stars to 5 gets a heart), but my rating of a song changes from day to day anyway, so I wouldn't say that more precision helped me enjoy my music more. That being said, some people do like the 5-star system, so I say add a toggle and let everyone choose for themselves. Anyway, The Zune 30 is not nearly as nice as my old nano, but I've played with the 80s in the store and I feel like the squircle is a much better control mechanism than the click wheel. And it's awesome how MS continues to support the old models, adding interface updates, games, etc. With an iPod your'e pretty much stuck with the features it came with until you buy a new player.
So yeah, the Zune experience has been up and down, but that's the price of being an early adopter.
