Rumor: Australian iPhones will be unlocked {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
May 7th 2008 3:46PM This bosters my theory that the 3G phone will be unlocked worldwide and that Apple will work with carriers to provide iPhone plans & subsidies, as well as specific rights to carry and sell the iPhone. Revenue sharing *may* be dead folks--look at the poor iPhone sales in Europe. People there just don't want to get locked into a contract or deal with a phone that locks them to a specific carrier.
Here in the U.S., at&t might still be the "exclusive" carrier for sales and offer the rumored $200 subsidy if you sign up for a 2-year contract (through iTunes of course) but you can buy an unlocked 3G iPhone at any Apple Store and take it to any carrier or county of your choice.
This way Apple deals with both the twin problems of the cat & mouse unlocking game (and resultant warranty nightmare and bad PR) as well as the limits on sales due to exclusive carrier agreements. In the end, Apple might end up looking more like typical phone manufacturers such as Nokia and HTC.
The $20 iPod touch upgrade: really for legal reasons or no? {Engadget}

Jan 21st 2008 2:52PM Hmm... Microsoft didn't charge me anything to upgrade my Zune 30GB to the newest firmware/features to make it equivalent to their latest Zune players. I just don't see the legal *or* marketing logic here from Apple's point of view.

Forbes tells the tale of the Eee PC {Engadget}
Nov 3rd 2007 12:30PM @jkahan
This is a *real* laptop that can run XP and comes with fully-featured Linux installation, not a "smartphone companion" like the Foleo, which was essentially an underpowered large screen word processor/internet appliance *starting* at $500. Eee's base model starts at $299. Compare the specs and you'll see the difference:

iPhone delayed in France due to unlocking laws? {Engadget}

Oct 6th 2007 1:49PM I don't know what plans you were looking at, but AT&T's cheapest plan offering is $39.99 for 450 (anytime) minutes. For the same price I'm getting 1000 minutes on T-Mob. Plus you need to add on the (required) $20 iPhone data plan to make it work. So the *cheapest* iPhone plan you can get with the DeathStar is $60 (+obligatory taxes).
