Yikes! TomTom's iPhone car kit will cost $120, app sold separately {Autoblog}

Sep 26th 2009 7:59PM That is the implication, and TomTom is saying that they don't think the accuracy is quite good enough in the iPhone and that it should be supplemented with this more powerful unit to make it more like a standalone GPS. They incorporate a better GPS antenna and gyros into stanalone units, not to mention that they use true GPS not the aGPS found in the iPhone.

That said, I can tell you from my experience with the iPhone 3GS and Navigon GPS app that the built-in GPS is plenty good enough. The only time I've lost a lock has been in the tunnel beneath the Seattle Convention Center on I-5. I'm sure the Sygic and TomTom apps would do just as well without the extra (and expensive) TomTom mount.

One nice thing that people aren't mentioning is that if you have more than one iPhone in the household you can share apps between phones using iTunes Home Sharing. My wife and I did this and now we both have the GPS app on our phones from only one purchase. You just have to make sure that both users are logged into the same iTunes account.

Sep 26th 2009 1:46PM I got a vent mount from eBay for around $12 including shipping. It keeps the iPhone in a great spot for GPS underneath the windshield. I've been using the Navigon GPS app, which has been great. Save your money!

Sep 17th 2009 1:19AM It will pump out the audio just like the iPod does. When it gives an audible TTS direction, it quiets the iPod, says the instruction, and restarts the music right where it was. iPod controls are accessible within the app.

I don't have one hooked up via USB, but it works quite well through my AUX jack. The audio is much better this way than through the iPhone speaker which is too quiet and distorted.

iPhone 3.1 problems flood our tip box {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Sep 15th 2009 6:58PM Please note that neither of our phones were ever jailbroken/unlocked:

Updated my 3GS to 3.1 without incident. Updated my wife's 3GS to 3.1 and it was bricked. Uh oh. It demanded a restore, but it wouldn't roll back to 3.0.1. I tried all the advice in the Apple forums (delete/replace IPSW file, hard reset, sync on new computer, Restore-->"Option"-->point it to a backup location, etc.), but no dice. I called Apple support and scheduled an appointment with an Apple Genius at the Apple Store for the next morning. They replaced my wife's phone. I took it home and synced it, backed it up, and updated to 3.1. New phone is fine.

My opinion on this: If Apple borks your phone with a crap update, they HAVE TO replace/fix your phone whether it's within the warranty period or not. THEY broke it!

iPhone OS 3.1 adds new features and functionality {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Sep 10th 2009 12:24AM This is disinformation. Update 3.1 borks tethering and DOES NOT allow MMS. This guy is full of it and probably works for AT&T. These guys are out in the forums, so beware.

If you enjoy tethering, keep enjoying 3.0.1. Word to the wise.

Sep 9th 2009 3:03PM Can anyone confirm whether or not this update breaks tethering? Thanks!

TUAW First Look: Nike+iPod on your iPhone 3GS {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 25th 2009 7:03PM Ok, semi-relatedly: does anyone have a recommendation for a good exercise case or arm-band for the 3GS?

I've been running w/ a clip-on shuffle, and would like to try out the Nike+/3GS combo.

Find My iPhone: If only I could find myself so easily ... {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 18th 2009 1:10AM But can you use the Find My iPhone feature after you remote wipe?

Ideally, my first order of business would be to protect my data by wiping it out, then I'd want to recover the phone itself.
