Apple vs. Palm: the in-depth analysis {Engadget}

Jan 28th 2009 3:50PM I want to point out one thing: I used to work for a startup company (which shall remain nameless) that was given a big infusion of cash from a much, much bigger company (think a member of the then "Big 5"). In exchange, both companies listed each other as "partners" in various advertising materials. The relationship kind of went sour, and after a while, the big company came a callin' and asked for their investment back. By way of trying to force the hand of our smaller company, they said, "Do you know that we believe this relationship is in violation of Sarbanes-Oxley?" At first, our small company was freaked out. If true, that'd be the end of us. But then one of the lawyers pointed out the obvious, "If we're in violation, then you're in violation, too! And if this goes to court, sure we'll be run out of business. But we're a small company. The cost to us would be the value of our company, maybe a few tens of millions of dollars. The loss to you, as a big company would be disastrous; probably many hundreds of millions of dollars!" With that, the big company said, "Keep the money!" and split.

This could be a lot like that. Apple, being the big fish, may have the deep pockets to run Palm into the ground. But the stakes for them are a lot higher, because if palm actually wins, the cost could conceivably be in the billions (say, $10 an iWhatzit forever).

iPhone 3G overtakes the RAZR as best-selling domestic handset {Engadget Mobile}

Nov 11th 2008 7:49AM I've seen the adds. But I was under the impression the apps in the app store don't have native access to the OS (for instance, can they multitask?). I've been able to download and install apps over the internet from an "app store" for like 10 years already. That's not new, but my old Panasonic phone certainly wasn't a smart phone!

Nov 10th 2008 12:27PM But, technically speaking, isn't the iPhone a feature phone, not a smart phone, since it doesn't really have native applications? Thus, the comparison to the Blackberry is a bit misleading.

BlackBerry 9000 in the wild {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 28th 2008 4:02PM I've got a question about Blackberries in general: right now I've got a Treo 680 and one thing I love about it is that it is compatible with Yahoo Music Unlimited. I had to purchase extra software (PocketTunes) but now I just pick a whole bunch of tracks, click sync, and they're on my phone -- for FREE (as long as I keep my subscription current). Loosing this capability is a deal-breaker for me, as I really don't want a separate portable music player -- convergence, baby! Is there an equivalent for Blackberry? If so, I might hold off for this thing (or just grab an 8820). If not, I guess I'll have to keep waiting.

Lowly (but 3G) Nokia 3555 hits retail for T-Mobile {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 18th 2008 8:08AM How much of T-Mobile's network is 3G? I live in Boston, and I can't seem to find any information on weather they've got 3G here -- or not. I wouldn't switch phones yet (I'm a Treo user, and looking to upgrade to a flashier smartphone...but there's the $ issue) but it'd be great to have Bluetooth DUN working at 3G, and my wife's looking for a new phone...

Inventec allegedly flubs 144,000 Treo 680s {Engadget Mobile}

Nov 17th 2006 11:36AM Sooooo, how long does it take to recall every shipment, open every box, open every phone, reattach every wire, close every phone, close every box, and ship them back to the gosh darned store SO I CAN BUY ONE?

Bueller? Bueller? Fry?

Hands-on with the Treo 680 {Engadget Mobile}

Oct 12th 2006 2:44PM What the heck is the Sprint phone with the apple? This is a) a GSM phone and b) not an Apple!
