Windows Mobile 6.1 gets pictured, detailed {Engadget Mobile}

Dec 3rd 2007 2:25PM ummm, in this case, should not it be the "the angel's in the details," or something? I gues it is pretty nice that MS is using resources on a "small" update. But I dont understand how the built in update feature of WinMo works, if the carriers and manufacturers have to be the ones to actually release the updates for their devices.

Verizon's XV6800 in the wild, finally available to order {Engadget Mobile}

Nov 28th 2007 1:50PM I have used both devices; the xv6800 and treo 700wx are both good devices in general, but they are very different. So it is more a matter of preference. (BTW, the extra ram in the 700wx over the 700w makes a HUGE improvement in multitasking and a little improvement in stability and speed.) Since you are so happy with your old 6600, I agree that you may not like the 700wx b/c it is so different. To oversimplify it a bit, my opinion is the 700wx is a better one-hand device and the xv6800 is a better two-hand device. Since you are already getting the 700wx, I suggest you concentrate on trying out its one-handedness. Try to never pull out that stylus (there are some rare tasks that require it). Focus on the extra and speedy usefulness of the today screen: the ability to immediately look up your contacts just by typing in their name and then calling them; the very speedy speed dialing; the convenient web search box on the today screen; oh and the I-can't-believe-nobody-else-does-this "silent all" switch at the top. Once you have learned to use the 700wx one-handed and its convenient features, if you still don't like it, ditch it, cause you will likely never like it. Hope this helps.

Blu-ray / HD DVD stalemate boosting interest in combo player? {Engadget}

Dec 16th 2006 8:22PM "While we've seen the Blu-ray-equipped PS3 outsell Microsoft's HD DVD drive 5 to 1, there isn't much substance in such a statistic..."
I disagree; I think there is a lot of substance to this statistic. First, though, the real comparison is total BRD players compared to total HDDVD players. Obviously all PS3's are BRD players, so there is currently well over 400,000 BRD players in the (US) market right now as we discuss this. It is expected that PS3's will continue to sell as fast as stores can stock them through aproxmately 1,000,000 units, which should be by the end of January at the latest. If this is correct, then in about one month from now, BRD will already have well over a million players installed. Now I am [totalling] guessing that this is a lot more than HD DVD players (does anyone know the actualy stats on HD DVD players sold?). If this is the case, then a snowball effect is likely to occur: more content will become available on BRD b/c of the greater installed base of players, then the larger library of content will spur consumers to choose BRD players, and so on.

Has your Zune gotten social yet? {Engadget}

Nov 14th 2006 7:54PM Jeff, ummm, so if someone has a good experience with a Zune, they must be lying and being paid by MS? Come on, it is possible, and probably likely, for consumers to have a positive experience.

Third time's a charm: OLPC notebook now called XO {Engadget}

Oct 24th 2006 2:51PM For those of you that scorn NickNeg's "mission" here, I suggest that you are looking at this very wrong. First, if it is so important to get "them" food instead of doing something else, what are you, personally, doing to get them food? Or are you doing "something else" with your resources? If you have a pet, then you are spending money on some animal while children around the world are starving. How atrocious! (If analogy does not apply, you can find something that fits.)

Yes, food, medicine, and basic education are extremely important but not everything we do HAS TO BE the highest priority. Again with the animal analogy: (this is true) I used to scorn the activity of people that ran animal shelters when there are CHILDREN that need sheltering. While children ARE more important than animals, I eventually realized not everyone has to be in the specific "business" of sheltering children, and the animal-shelterers are doing something good. Maybe not the "most important" thing, but they see a need in the world and they are seeking to address it. NickNeg sees a need in the world and he is seeking to address it. Maybe not the most important need, but it is good, and it may have potential to help a lot in long run.

Another thing is that it is the governments' responsibilities to decide if this is a good way to use their resources. In other words, if you scorn, do so towards Libya for actually doing this to its people, not Negroponte for simply offering them an opportunity.

Lastly, there are already numerous world-wide organizations (such as World Vision) that focus on providing the basic needs-for-life in poverty stricken countries. And they make it very easy for people like you and me to participate.

I hope you see my point; cheers!

Next OQO handheld PC could have cellular capability {Engadget}

Oct 22nd 2006 4:06PM That would be pretty cool. I have had the opportunity to use an OQO extensively, and they are pretty cool machines. They are small enough that people have a difficult time grasping the fact that they are a full-fledged ("regular") computer. Also, the two OQO's that I have used could get pretty hot, but they never overheated.

Palm announces Treo 680 {Engadget}

Oct 12th 2006 5:16PM Well, I have a feeling this 680 could be extremely successful, if consumers are able to get it for, say, $200-250 (after rebates, etc.) In my opinion, the Palm OS is still a little more user friendly, so if people are able hold one in a store and can IMMEDIATELY SEE the increased power/functionality over a "regular" phone, and it only cost a little more; that is a good recipe.

Palm Treo 700wx to bring Verizon holiday cheer {Engadget Mobile}

Oct 12th 2006 12:07PM #10, yes there is a hardware difference. The wx has 64MB of ram and the w has only 32MB of ram. I, for one, am very happy about this b/c I am constantly hit the w's ram deficiency.
