HP set to launch the Compaq 2730p Centrino 2 tablet PC {Engadget}

Jul 17th 2008 10:58AM I too am really interested on estimated battery life on this puppy. The previous model in this series, the 2710p, was a real champ of battery life with its U7600 processor squeaking out just under 8 hours on the standard battery. If they can pull comparable figures with a 1.83ghz processor then I might just sell my Fuji T2010 that does 13 hours for more beef.
Then again I've heard I will be able to take any processor of the right series and shove it in my T2010, so maybe I'll keep it anyways!
The chemically treated tempered glass screen is a REALLY nice touch on the HP 2710p though.

Three WD VelociRaptors get setup in RAID 5 array, testing ensues {Engadget}

Jun 29th 2008 4:51PM Sigh, I hate people who use HDtune and HDtach to generate what they think are these really incredible numbers. Those programs are so pathetic at estimating disk performance that they are practically meaningless lies.
If you want to do a real benchmark of disk performance you use IOMeter. Its a lot more complicated to use and understand, but ultimately is one of the only ways to generate true disk performance figures.

Auzen X-Fi HomeTheater 7.1 HDMI sound card does bitstream output from your HTPC {Engadget}

Jun 20th 2008 12:39PM Finally, lossless audio from PC to HT. I've only been waiting 3 years for this.
Sadly, most audio mastered for PC (games mainly) consumption gets shattered down to horrible bitrates and quality. At least the daring developers who do put up high quality audio will get some way to transport it!

HTC Advantage X7510 available to USers for $1,300 {Engadget}

Jun 18th 2008 1:51PM One of my very wealthy customers ordered this device on my recommendation and I got to play with it for a few days before he picked it up and left for his annual trip around the world. (He loves the device btw).
This PDA is really awesome, the screen and ergonomics of it are just perfect for what its intended for. Even a 3.5" screen is too small for touching and other things.
The 5" screen is perfect for Windows Mobile & Internet functions (Opera Mobile 9.5), the magnetic keyboard is pretty slick too and works pretty well. The device is thin and everything is just awesome. It only has a few problems.
1: The device is also a phone, it is speakerphone only. You better like bluetooth headsets because that is all you are going to use. My customer has a different phone he carries around, he was using a Universal before but not as a phone, just PDA.
2: The thing is just slightly tall/wide to fit into any pockets (shirt pocket, front pant pockets) so you need a holster to carry this, which is slightly annoying.

Now, it is expensive, but why would you want it over a laptop?
Battery life. This is a PDA so your battery life is stellar. I have a 12" tablet with a 13 hour battery life and it wouldn't be able to touch the Advantage.

Researchers create supercomputer with four GeForce 9800 GX2 cards {Engadget}

May 29th 2008 8:03PM Does this guy not know that nVidia already sells this kind of stuff called the Quadroplex?

Dell engaged in misleading business practices, says NY judge {Engadget}

May 28th 2008 11:23AM Having dealt with Dell for many years (both as a VAR, and as a competitor) I can say that this kind of attitude runs deeply through every single department of the entire company, its part of their culture. Its never going to change until there is a serious change of upper management (that includes saying goodbye to Michael Dell and friends) who will force the change in middle management, which will then start to change the majority of the companies ethics, because as of right now, Dell has none.

NVIDIA next-gen GPU details leak out, nothing too exciting {Engadget}

May 22nd 2008 12:18AM Maybe $110 in raw materials (chips, pcb, ram, etc) which still seems quite doubtful, but that doesn't cover the 10+ million nvidia probably spends in R&D on each chip.

Epson unveils ridiculously high resolution E Ink display {Engadget}

May 21st 2008 9:50PM Wow, I just got a Sony PRS-505 which I love, and it has a DPI of about 170, and its pretty damn good looking. 384 DPI has got to be incredible. Hopefully they get refresh times way down, including super fast refreshes for smaller updates (by zones instead of full page) and near universal inking (as in Wacom) and we really are on to the greatest thing ever.

Sprint discontinuing Broadband Direct {Engadget}

May 19th 2008 1:30PM Sprint Broadband Connect was nothing to be desired! It had an average latency of about 400ms and occasionally would get fits of very high packet loss. It was true you could get really good download speeds (15mbit down in 1999) but that was really rare, and upload speeds were an atrocious 256kbit. Customer service was awful, and unfortunately you had to call them a lot because their service was constantly dropping out, their control system on their towers would suddenly decide you weren't registered to be on the net, and various other issues. This kind of experience wasn't limited to myself, I had several friends in my area that had identical experiences, as well as some relatives in other states who also experience Sprint Broadband as I described. It was really a very painful experience that I would not wish on anyone.

Canon's PowerShot SD1100 IS gets reviewed {Engadget}

May 16th 2008 8:43PM I've got the SD1100 and I really do love it. The new interface is kinda funky, but after playing with it for an our it makes sense (mostly). The image quality is fantastic, the autofocus and optic image stabilization is amazing, and it can turn on and take a picture really really damn quick (like 2 seconds). Its also incredibly compact.
