Verizon follows AT&T on the black ink trail {Engadget Mobile}
May 1st 2008 12:16AM AT&T in fact does a better job of ATTRACTING retail-postpaid customers...it's just the problem of KEEPING THEM.
AT&T grossed a record 5 million new customers in the first quarter...that's a record for ALL carriers, not just AT&T. But since their overall churn remained flat at 1.7%, they netted much fewer customers than Verizon.
For every tenth of a percentage point that AT&T lowers their churn, they'll retain and in turn improve their net adds by approximately 200,000 customers. This is where they need to put their focus on; retention. They're ahead of the game with everything else.
Nokia's touchscreen Tube out in the wilds? {Engadget Mobile}
Apr 9th 2008 2:15PM When will these companies realize that any "touchscreen" that doesn't have Multi-Touch or at least some sort of heat-sensitive touch capacity, are not true competitors to the iPhone? I was tempted to wait for several models such as the Voyager and Vu (and even this model seemed tempting, until it was revealed that it was pressure sensitive). However, the true ease-of-use and elegance that the iPhone exudes is all due to its Multi-Touch interface. Until a company releases a phone with a touchscreen of similar tech (like I believe, Samsung is trying to do) the iPhone will reign supreme in the touchscreen market.
Sprint hits back with the Samsung Instinct {Engadget Mobile}
Apr 1st 2008 3:29PM Dropping $100M on marketing for a phone that is not worth even TRYING to build the hype that the iPhone received...brilliant move Sprint! Especially after marking down that $29 billion loss over the Nextel acquisition last quarter.
Hopefully Samsung picks up part of the tab. Or else there might not be a network for this "little guy" to run on in two years.
Nokia Siemens rolling out EDGE Evolution in Q3: like EDGE with half the slow {Engadget Mobile}
Mar 27th 2008 11:50AM The article mentions the "software upgrade" this requires...is that for both the backend infrastructure and consumer handsets? Or will a carrier's infrastructure require additional hardware, and the consumer handset require only a software update?
I ask because I'm wondering how likely it would be for a carrier such as AT&T to invest in this advancement for the sake of phones such as the iPhone (as mentioned). I'm assuming the cost of a hardware upgrade as opposed to simply licensing a software upgrade would sway carriers to ignore that this technology exists and move forward with 3G and 4G development.

Verizon Wireless opens network to "Any Apps, Any Device" in 2008 {Engadget Mobile}
Nov 27th 2007 9:44AM Not necessarily, Randy. It was a Vodafone exec that reported Verizon Wireless' pending devotion to the LTE standard (which makes sense considering Vodafone's undying desire for Verizon to conform to the worldwide wireless standard). In a separate interview of Verizon execs, it was reported that all options (meaning LTE, UMB and WiMax) remained on the table.
