AT&T announces iPhone 3G pricing plans {Engadget}

Jul 1st 2008 12:54PM @Andrew

Haha its the idiot who used to type all in caps. I'd rather be defending AT&T then Sprint like you are. I mostly state facts. If you hate the phone so much then why are you on this article?

Yes Sprints data network is bigger, but who cares if there is no one using it, and no truly unique and worthy devices to use on that network. Sheer numbers speak for themselves. Sprint is hemorrhaging customers while AT&T is adding them. AT&T is #1 (for now) Sprint is sinking fast. Never let go Hamidxa.........never let go

Jul 1st 2008 12:31PM Well i don't agree hardware wise. Both phones you mentioned are copying the iPhone in some way lol. The software is inferior, and i'm not an apple fanboy i just have the opinion that the iPhone software is much more powerful and robust. Software wise you are right, the iPhone doesn't really have any legal software...........yet, i'm sure that will change very soon. As far a service goes that is completely of user opinion and location. Sprint sucks here but i guess AT&T sucks there ok, but people are bailing from Sprint in Droves while AT&T is #1 here in the U.S. (for now) hmmmmm

Jul 1st 2008 12:13PM I didn't say they should have known it would be subsidized, i said they should have known not to upgrade/enter into a new contract so close to the new iPhone coming out or in anticipation of it, simply because they didn't know if it would be subsidized or not. And yes he said $199 for an iPhone......WITH A 2 YEAR SERVICE AGREEMENT. Every other phone works this way. If your in the middle of your contract and a new phone comes out tomorrow, you would not be eligible to buy it at the 2 year contract price.............just like the iPhone.

Let me explain a little about subsidies. You buy a subsidized phone and sign a 2 year contact, AT&T loses money on the phone (lets say about $150 or so) and makes it back over the course of 2 years. In a years time or 6 months time you want another phone at the 2 year contact price (lets say an iPhone where AT&T loses over $200 or more), if AT&T did this for you they would lose money on the first phone and not fully make it back before losing even more money on the second phone in which you say you will fulfill another 2 year contact. You may or may not fulfill the contract because you can get out for $175 or less meaning that you just screwed AT&T over 2 times, once by not fulfilling the contract and again because they don't recoup all the money they spent subsidizing the phone.

Lets face it, AT&T and every other phone company is out to make money. Subsidizing phones is a way to get people to sign up for service by offering them a cheaper phone upfront and losing money, but making up the cost over the long run (even video game systems do this) by keeping you paying for the service. The real point here is how so many people don't understand how the system works. Its been in place for many years and most people use it and bitch about it but don't fully understand it. The iPhone is now a part of that system just like every other phone, but people think that somehow things are that drastically different. People write on here about how they are getting screwed over by getting a phone a few months ago (in which AT&T lost money on) and now they want a new iPhone and AT&T won't give it to them for the cheap price (so AT&T loses hundreds more). The loss of money and revenue generated wouldn't equal out or make sense. People need to be more responsible for their decisions and stop bitching about it. Just because i'm pointing out that fact doesn't make me or AT&T the bad guy.

Jul 1st 2008 11:52AM Half of you people wouldn't say a word about buying a PDA/Smartphone on Verizon and paying $30 a month for unlimited data, but oh no, not for the iPhone.
