NHTSA study indicates hybrids have higher pedestrian crash rates {Autoblog}

Nov 8th 2009 4:31PM Nope. A modern car at a low speed pretty much makes only tire noise, which is about the same noise you get with a hybrid.

However, with a hybrid, you get this high-pitched noise when it's in EV mode. Maybe some people can't hear that high frequency, but you should still be able to hear the tires. The engine fan can also be running as well when in EV mode, so it's even less of an excuse at that point.

The belief that hybrids are super stealth kill vehicles is such a lie to anyone who has actually been around cars.

Nov 8th 2009 4:29PM Shh. Rational analysis is not allowed. What we need are more laws to make hybrids sound like straight pipe harleys, and airbags on hoods. And then we'll blame Toyota.

For an Imperfect World: The Official Rules of Shotgun {Autoblog}

Nov 8th 2009 4:27PM It depends on who is driving. With certain older family members, I do everything I can to avoid sitting up front... it's too terrifying.

First Drive: 2011 Kia Sorento finally crosses over {Autoblog}

Nov 7th 2009 4:38PM Look at this and having driven a Borrego a few times, it's just unbelievable how far Kia has come since the early days. Unbelievable.

Nov 7th 2009 4:36PM Yea, I guess we could abandon capitalism and go with lots of worker's benefits via unions, protectionism, et al. I mean, that worked out really well! It's not like we've ever had any sort of mega corporation fail because of such things...

U.S. Army and EnerDel team up for electric-hybrid Humvee {Engadget}

Nov 6th 2009 5:59PM Also, I always enjoy seeing automotive and military-related stories on Engadget. It's funny because maybe only 5-10% of the typical commenters know anything about cars, or any sort of topic outside WoW; yet they comment anyway as if they know what they are saying.

The best are seeing firearm-related videos on YouTube, and seeing those kids commenting on them with "knowledge" obviously gleaned from CoD4 and CS.

Nov 6th 2009 5:56PM It's relative. Take any other vehicle that can match the capabilities of the HMMWV and then compare it to the electric hybrid HMMWV and see which wins as most stealthy.

Nov 6th 2009 5:54PM >> great for dropping out of airplanes, perhaps, but not so great a candidate for electric power.

Disagreed. Electric motors produce full torque from 0 RPM. As such, they could be quite useful for a heavy vehicle which may have to pull a heavy load from a standstill or move quickly from a stop.

This is a good idea, but I'm concerned about the weight of the batteries. HMMWVs are already heavy enough, especially if you add armor (which they weren't designed for). Adding a bunch of batteries are going to add even mroe weight. In addition, electric cars really fail in extreme cold. The HMMWVs can do extreme cold, extreme heat, and everything in between. Electric cars are nowhere near to doing that yet.

SEMA 2009: Blackout Bentley balances the bad {Autoblog}

Nov 6th 2009 4:47PM The body kit and the gutter guard grill kind of destroy what I *think* they were giong for. The wheels certainly aren't any good either. Looks more at home on an old, "blingy" Escalade than on a Bentley.

VIDEO: Self-policing Wisconsin woman calls 911, turns herself in for drunk driving {Autoblog}

Nov 5th 2009 3:27PM A note about doing this. As I understand it, do NOT have your keys in the ignition, or "sleep it off" in the front seat. Either way might land you with a DUI charge, even if you're sitting parked in your own driveway. So if you have to sleep it off, do so with your keys in your pocket, and you in the backseat.
