RIM promises "strongest second half ever" {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 30th 2008 7:26PM I find it easy to believe that RIM will have its strongest second half ever, as just about every quarter it doubles revenue and profits, when compared to the same quarter a year ago.

And RIM's "lackluster" conference call included the announcement that the company had only twice the revenue and profit the same period of 2007, when analysts had been predicting more than 100% growth.

Palm announces Q4 earnings -- it's not as bad as you think {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 28th 2008 10:07PM > retail store closings

Just so we're all on the same page, the original article on Palm's retail store closing was mostly incorrect. It said the Palm-branded stores in airports are going to close. These aren't actually owned by Palm, but by another company, and are alive and well. I was in one this week.

The stores that closed were a few that were in malls that never did all that well to begin with.

Leaked AT&T memo points to 3G iPhone release in late June? {Engadget Mobile}

May 6th 2008 3:06PM All signs have been pointing for a while to Apple releasing the iPhone 3G in late June, so this is really no surprise.

As for FCC approval, the release is still about six weeks away, so there's plenty of time for that to happen.

Move over, Opera Mini: TeaShark to offer desktop-quality browsing, too {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 27th 2008 12:45PM Yes, like Opera Mini, TeaShark is a proxy-based browser. Both apps do it for the same reason: it greatly speeds up surfing speed on mobile phones with limited hardware.

I understand why these make some people nervous, but they are safe if you use them with care. No one cares what you read on Engadget, but don't check your bank balance with them.

Move over, Opera Mini: TeaShark to offer desktop-quality browsing, too {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 26th 2008 6:56PM I've installed and taken TeaShark for a short test drive. It runs fine in the Java VM on an AT&T Tilt, BTW.

My first impressions are that it does a good job of rendering pages, and sites look basically like they would on your PC. You can easily scroll around and select links with the D-pad, but as with all Java apps I've tried there's no touchscreen support.

A highlight is a nice system for viewing thumbnails of pages you've already visited.

The bad news is that TeaShark is slow, at least on this device. Just about all pages, no matter their size, take 30 to 45 seconds to open, even on a 3G connection. This might be related to the company's proxy server being overworked.

Still, a app worth keeping an eye one.

Poll: did you get into the iPhone Developer Program? {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 14th 2008 3:56PM Apple is NOT sending out rejection letters. It is sending developers a notice telling them that their request to join has been received, but the program is still at a very early, pre-beta stage. At a later date, when Apple is ready to let new companies and individuals join its iPhone Developer program, applicants will be contacted again.

To prove this, here is an exact copy of the email Apple is sending out:

-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-

Dear Registered iPhone Developer,

Thank you for expressing interest in the iPhone Developer Program. We have received your enrollment request. As this time, the iPhone Developer Program is available to a limited number of developers and we plan to expand during the beta period. We will contact you again regarding your enrollment status at the appropriate time.

Thank you for applying.

Best regards,
iPhone Developer Program

Flash on the iPhone: Apple has Goldilocks syndrome {Engadget Mobile}

Mar 6th 2008 9:31AM I'd put Flash in the top five most requested iPhone features, but it's an unfortunate fact of life that companies with successful products have the tendency to start telling their customers what they do and don't need, rather than listening to what people are asking for.

The lack of Flash support in the iPhone means that its web browser is moving down on the list of top mobile browsers. I'd put the browser in the latest Nokia Internet Tablets at the top of the list, closely followed by Skyfire for Windows Mobile. The iPhone browser is in third place.

PacketVideo brings Mobile TV to any WiFi device {Engadget Mobile}

It's my understanding that PacketVideo has no intention for you to share the video streaming from this device with anyone. If someone else wants to watch video on their smartphone, they'll need to get their own receiver.

The reason it uses Wi-Fi is to give users a wireless connection between their smartphone and PacketVideo's accessory. Wires are too much of a hassle, and Bluetooth isn't an option because it doesn't provide enough bandwidth.

PSP Phone reference spotted in Sony Magazine {Engadget Mobile}

Feb 15th 2008 12:34PM I spoke with Merran Wrigley, a Sony Ericsson VP and head of External Communications, about this last month, and she said a PSP phone isn't anywhere close to being released.

Sony Ericsson's X1 running some fancy new version of Windows Mobile? {Engadget Mobile}

Feb 13th 2008 4:13PM Yeah, it's almost certainly running Windows Mobile 6.1, which Microsoft isn't ready to announce yet, even though it has been leaked all over the Web.

The new HTC Advantage X7510 will also run WM 6.1.
