iPhone 3G purchase and activation will be in-store only {Engadget}

Jun 9th 2008 10:48PM "I have never heard of this. If that's true, then people should unlock away. But if Apple is requiring you to pay for service activation before you leave the store it makes unlocking somewhat pointless. So, it may suck but again if you don't like it you don't have to buy it. Go get a Touch Diamond. They look awesome."

You haven't heard of it because it's not in the common interest of carriers to inform you about such inconvenient legislation. Understand that while corporations may bribe (*ahem* lobby) to get laws passed, they can't write them.
A EULA has NEVER been legally binding. Just ask SonyBMG.
True, the Diamond is awesome. True, no one HAS to buy an iPhone. However, we don't have to accept the choices that are handed to us by companies. A little innovation by the online community can go a long way in empowering consumers.

Jun 9th 2008 10:35PM That won't happen until T-Mobile becomes a significant threat to At&t's business. At this point, Verizon is the only company who At&t considers a true competitor, so I wouldn't bank on that $99 unlimited everything happening anytime soon. It sucks, but we practically have a Telecom "duopoly" right now.

Jun 9th 2008 10:31PM "They have to have a 'full price' hidden away in some dark corner, please, OMG please!"

Unfortunately, no. If you're not eligible to upgrade, you can't even buy this phone. At least that's the official word at the moment. For the good of us all, let's hope that changes.

Jun 9th 2008 10:24PM "It is what it is."

That's such a meaningless statement: A = A. Of course, it is what it is.

What people are trying to figure out is a way, through personal action, to change the "what it is" part to something more sensible.

In other terms, A + B = C, where A = standard activation procedure, B = beating the system after purchasing, and C = the result we want, which is an iPhone without chains.

Jun 9th 2008 10:17PM "If you cancel within the trial period, you have to return the equipment otherwise, AT&T/Apple is going to charge your credit card with a full retailed price. And trust me, the retailed price is going to be high."

Actually, they'll just charge the $175 ETF, so you could get an iPhone for $375, I guess.

Jun 9th 2008 10:10PM "You mean they're doing whatever they can to prevent you from violating their EULA? Ooh, how *evil*."

Well, if it's an evil EULA, then I'd say you're right.

iPhone 3G hands-on {Engadget}

Jun 9th 2008 5:40PM You know that manufacturers set prices, right? A carrier can eat alot of the cost with a contract, but only to a certain extent. HTC has never been known as a "value" manufacturer. I remember how everyone thought the tilt was a steal at $300 with service.
